Help in finding this car

Attached is a picture of my Navy buddy's '69 Z/28. He bought it in the late fall of '68 and told me several years later it was the 6th Z off of the Van Nuys assembly line. Don't have a VIN, but is there any way to find out if this could be. I would like to find out if the car is still around and surprise my friend with the info. BTW When I went to visit him in early spring of '69 he let me drive it and I ordered mine when I got home. Just had to have one.

Well without a Vin it is near impossible to verify such info. If you had a friend at the DMV or police force you could try running the license plate number. Looks like YBM 016 ? If your friend has any old paperwork that shows the license number or Vin then you would have a glimmer of hope of finding the car. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Yea, I know it’s a long shot, but I thought someone out there in Z/28land might know something. This picture was made spring ‘69. This early car did not come with front & rear spoilers. It did have chambered exhaust though, which brought a few conversations with the local law about it being a stock exhaust system.

Well they made 20,302 69 Z/28's  if you break those down by color percentages, I am sure you would be in thousands of silver cars still.
"Z/28 land" is a large country, "COPO land" is a small city, and "ZL-1 land"  is a even smaller town.

"Z/28 land" is even harder to search because Z/28 land is always getting larger with all the clones. I would say the L.A. cars would be the hardest to pin point with no X codes as identifiers.

Try starting with the license plate if no paperwork exists, if that produces a VIN, then you can do an internet search.

Looks like your buddy went to the drags back in the day, based on the '68 behind him in that picture - long shot, but you could try posting that on other forums like Yenko.net , classracer etc and see if anyone remembers your buddy and his car - would help if you have any clues as to which tracks he attended.
On a side note, looking at the position of the grille emblem in that period photo is a great reminder to me that these cars were not all built the exactly the same. Thanks for posting!

If your buddy based that statement on his VIN number, then it logically follows the car would be 124379L500006 for the 6th Camaro off the Van Nuys assembly line. There would not be any way to determine it was the 6th Z, but maybe the 6th Camaro overall as the sequential VIN started with 500000 in both Norwood and Van Nuys. Test that out !

Great pic, nice Z. Love the Goodyears - wish I had a stack of them.

Tim good eye on the grill emblem, just a little more towards the center. I like the dealer license frame. Do you know what dealer he purchased it from?, they may still be around..

I Googled it to no avail, and the CRG documentation list for '69's starts with L500054 (unfortunately). Google doesn't always work, but it sounds plausible to me that your bud would based his belief of #6 on the VIN sequence. Good luck, and keep on searching -

The Z emblem position looked OK to me in that photo.. but maybe the perspective affects how it appears?

If I remember correctly Y plates were Aug-Sept 68 so an early car yes but an X car would be August based on that a 19L502 series? it would be somewhere in there but again just a guess. Looks like Burbank? in the background? Navy maybe Montgomery Field? at an airport. All guesses!

Well the plates were allocated by which city used the most, then that city got another batch from Sacramento. So you could have a less traveled suburb DMV office that may still have Y plates in January, or you could have gotten a DMV office that was busy issuing plates and went through all the X plates a bit faster, and started issuing Y plates in august/september. My 10B L.A. car (early ) 69 has the prefix YDP, just for reference. VIN 5038xx. Sold in Covina, which was probably a middle of the row office back then I would think, as far as how busy they would have been.

Sorry to hijack, but I love period photos and of interest to me in that picture is that while the car has all the 'brightwork' features of Z21 (style trim), the rocker/sill appears to be body color, with no blackout treatment - certainly there's more shadowing under the spear trim towards the rear, but at the front it looks silver above and below...... anyone care to comment?

ZLP...  I went back and looked at the photo and I conclude it could be either way (from viewing the photo).. the blackout was painted 'after the car was paint the primary color', so it would have been black painted over the silver, and the blackout was apparently quickly applied, inconsistent and thin; also road trash easily removed or chipped it behind the front wheels...  I don't think any conclusion can be drawn from that photo...

It looks like body color on the rockers, but I agree hard to say for sure with that picture.

No way for him or anyone else to know if it was the 6th Z28 off the line.  If it is 9L500006, it's not in the database.

My Van Nuys Z28 is a Jan Car & YTR 601 Plates So his plates do sound correct for August! My car is like 20100 Camaro Van Nuys Made! Bill
