« on: February 09, 2007, 02:42:11 AM »
I am in the process of restoring a 1967z28/RS, and I if the car should get rs emblems on the fenders, and if so, exactly where do they go? I also am in need of many parts for the car. If you have any please feel free to contact me. Thanks, Ray

RS emblems do go on the fenders and it's very tricky to install them in the true position.  In all the years I've been judging, 1967 RS emblem installation looks like a train wreck on most restored cars that I've seen.  I have original tracings but I will not send them out.  Maybe I can make a copy somehow.  It's very time consuming to do this right.

Hi Ray -

You need to get a 1967 Camaro Assembly Instruction Manual (AIM).  This is the book the factory used to assemble the cars on the line.  It's listed on the following link with some other good books you will need for your restoration:

 http://www.camaros.org/crgrefs.shtml

Hope this helps and good luck with your restoration!

Others have tried to work with the assembly manual.  Hard to do.  The best way for the best results is to make a tracing from an original RS fender and overlay the tracing paper on the new fender.

Hi Jerry -

Do you know how the holes where located and drilled at the factory?  Where all the holes drilled in exactly the same place on every fender?  How about the original tracings you've made, are they all exactly the same?  I'm curious.    ???

Paul,

There were punched from the factory and true position was right on the money with every origianl car that I've seen.  There is no easy way I can explain this templet to you.  It has to be taped on the fender a certain way.  Maybe John Z can shed some light on how the factory punched the holes in the fenders.  I have used this tracing several times and it's right on the money.  Did my 67 turquoise Z28, and many more.

Jerry -

You should figure out a "sure-fire" way to position your tracings on the fender and then market them.  $$$   ;D

I would but there's more money in appraisals and certifying cars.  Maybe when I retire I will do that.  Right now there are just not enough hours in a day to get it all done.

Since we're on the subject, how much is it to have my Z/28 "MacNeish certified?"   ;)

Paul,

There were punched from the factory and true position was right on the money with every origianl car that I've seen. Maybe John Z can shed some light on how the factory punched the holes in the fenders. Jerry

Each fender was loaded into a hydraulic piercing fixture which clamped and located it precisely; the operator then turned a valve to the position with the combination of holes required for that particular car's style and option conditions and pushed a button, which actuated the desired combination of hydraulic piercing dies to create all the emblem holes required. None of the holes were drilled - all were pierced.

JohnZ -

Thanks for the info!  The piercing method would account for the little pieces of metal still hanging on the back side of the hole I often see.

Well, that's a two day trip and expensive.  Maybe I can work you in with another client's appraisal.  I will be flying into Ontariio, CA.  Is that close to you?

Jerry, Redwood City is up in Northern California however, Ontario is only 50 miles from my house. When you going to come into town and where you headed?
