Mixed N vin and LOS trim tag?
« on: January 04, 2018, 04:39:28 PM »
Tried doing a search but didn't get a match, looked thru the CRG articles and didn't see this addressed.

There is a '68 RSSS being offered for sale where the seller claims the build was a special order NOR delivered to LOS for assembly. Smells completely fishy to me and sets off red flags. Anyone every come across this before?

'68 8L330177 L22/M11 options (250/155hp, 3-speed floor)
NCRS report: built 02/21/68
Dealership: Rudolph Chevrolet Inc. El Paso, TX
Looking for any build information or documentation.

10a los yy 730 - 1st week of oct 1967 an early #333 norwood vin with a los cowl tag

Never happened. Either the VIN or the Trim Tag's been swapped.

I got tired of trying to read the ad, but a few items I immediately noticed is a rear mounted AM antenna but an AM/FM radio so it's been added. Also, the license plate is ZKX 906 which is a late 1969 plate, so it too has been added.

He REALLY needs to learn how to use periods!!

After a little detective work, I found the car! The VIN is 124378N333168 and it was on ebay back in September of 2007 by seller larrycrosley. Here's the ad:

Quote
1968 Camero RS-SS California black plates car same owner of 25 years. Parked in 1984. 350 engine auto trans. Original engine and trans are gone. Have 427 Big Block and turbo 400 that go with the car. Engine needs rebuilt. The car has P/S, P/B, AC, disc breaks, power windows, tilt wheel, tic-tock tack, speed alarm, rear window defoger, original paint, no bondo. I have the original pink slip in my name, dated 1983.

And here are a few pictures of it back in 2007. (Sorry they're so small, but that's how they were in the auction) Note the license plates YBP 464.

Also note that since the trim tag looks like it's never been off the car, CHECK THOSE HIDDEN VINS CAREFULLY!!!

So I'm really confused. I emailed the seller and asked if he has any documentation to support the car's description.

Part of me wants to run away as fast as I can...

In this case it was actually fairly easy. He gave the first 3 digits of the VIN (Norwood 333) and it has a Los Angeles trim tag, so I just started looking at all my Norwood Coupe VIN's that started with 333 (and have an LA trim tag), and found it after just a few clicks!

I wanted to be sure it was the same car before I posted so I examined the pictures from the original auction and compared them to the new auction, and a few things immediately popped up. The options of course were one, but the clincher was the rust spots in the driver side door jam (see comparison of the 2007 auction door jam and the new auction door jam below).

I love it when people don't paint door jams!!

To be fair I dont think the whole car was sprayed.  You can see the spot shots around the window where it was attempted to be covered up.  But the doghouse was definitely shot.

I understand the description is bogus in regards to the NOR body comment, but if the body was indeed made in NOR and shipped to LOS, I would expect it to have a Fisher assigned NOR trim tag affixed to it and a LOS  "L" VIN, not the other way around.
