69 Z28 help before purchase
« on: December 05, 2017, 06:18:11 PM »
This is my first post but I've used the website for year with other cars.  I've got the opportunity to purchase a Cortez Silver 1969 Z28 Camaro and I have a few question.
Attached is the trim tag, block numbers and exterior pictures.
I'm having a difficult time coming to conclusion if this is a real Z28 or a clone.  My main concern is that while it has V0205DZ on the front of the block, there aren't any other numbers.

What are your thoughts from the attached photos?

The steering column looks as if it was for an automatic or am I wrong here?

That's 7 months between engine build and car build. I doubt it. Around the end of April, they switched to the 3970010 block. My 05A car is a little over 2 weeks from build to insertion. The vin would be stamped in the cast part of the block above the oil filter. Check there, but not likely it is the original engine.

I check for a VIN by the oil filter and can't find anything.  I did just find out from one of the previous owners that it's not the motor that came with the car but claims it to be a real 69 302 motor.
Opinions?

Trim & vin tags are legit.  Engine not original to car.  Verify trans and diff.  That would be more important at this point being the engine isn't adding value to the car.  Also check hidden vins just for piece of mind if able; although I do not believe the tags have been tampered with.

I think what you are looking at on the steering is the reverse lever for the backup lights and the starter lockout. Probably in the reverse position to allow it to start with backup lamps removed. Several other things to look at to see if it is a possible Z.

My main concerns are:
Is it a real Z28?  it appears to be to me.
Is the motor a real Z28 motor even though it didn't come with this car
The car is for sale at $52K.  Good, bad, or on the money?

The main problem is the car is neither fish nor fowl. It is not a correct, original drivetrain restoration. It is not a resto-mod. Not much appeal to either potential audience when you want to move it along.

If the car is done to near-perfection [paint, interior, drivability] it would probably auction in the mid-40s.

I would agree 52k is on the high side with the other mods that are on it, and assume it is missing those original parts.
FYI -I have seen NOM 302 69Z cars sold in the 50k range though.
Whether that is a real DZ stamp isn't going to mae a huge difference in the value of the car since it isn't original to the car.

While getting tougher to find a real 69Z these days, they are still plenty of them out there for a fair price.

For this specific car there are so many Z specific details to check out to verify it, and verify what it has and doesn't have. YH wheels, exhaust manifolds, no vinyl top, black grill for starters. Each thing you find that is incorrect is a deduction in price/value. Just based off of those things and the replacement motor, I would say a fair price for the car would be around mid to upper 30's, and that is only (if is real) AND if the trans and rear are original to the car. Original paperwork would help.

Hope this helps. :)

FYI- don't use photo bucket, your pics will disappear in each post.

I see it now. I didn't see it yesterday. It was blocked like a photobucket photo?

Kurt, Even though it shows 8 being blocked by photobucket, I think the 2 you can't see are the firewall tag and the vin pic.
Ironically the most important for you to see specifically, to chime in on authenticity. Maybe he can repost them, so you can weigh in.  ;)
