68 Z fuel sending unit

Does anyone know the part # for the original sending unit?  I have found some GM ones but the two parts look slightly different.  One has a straight barb-less pipe out of the sender.  Another has a longer pipe with a 45 bend at the end with a barb on it.  That one looks like what shows in the Chassis Service Manual, but it is a small picture.  This is the 3/8 line.

There's no difference between the Z28 sender and any other V8. They're all P/N 6427872. 1968 AIM, UPC 8, Sheet B4, Item 10.

Replaced in service by P/N 6428099. Replaced by 6428666 in August, 1971. Replaced by 6428845 in January, 1973.

I've never had mine out so I don't know what it looks like.  I forgot to look in the AIM so thanks for that!  Unfortunately both of those pictures say original GM part and I don't know how accurate either of the pictures are and the one in the AIM.  My problem is someone at some time cut the end off of mine so the original hose to connect the sending unit and the gas line is too short.

6428845 is still available from your local GM dealer, but it's NOT cheap! I got mine from THE CAR AND TRUCK SHOP and it fit perfectly. (And BTW, it looks like the one from Rick's.)

Ed, is that the one from GM, 6428845, that is superseded to 19179532?  That one is available all over for about the one at Rick's and looks like it.  Also HBC has one for double that and no picture to see if it looks like all these others.  Not a big deal but Rick's sale is over after midnight so I thought I would jump.  I guess at worst I could solder one of the repros lines to replace my cutoff line.  Mine works fine, it just doesn't look as installed with the rubber fuel line #9 on the AIM 8 B-4.

19179532 doesn't show any Camaro usage, but after 50 years, who knows what's been replaced/superseded!

Yes, just adds to the confusion.  I got under my car and looked with a mirror and the original looks like the one at Rick's.  I think I'll just get it and if I don't like it put it on ebay in a few years for $1500 like everybody else on there.  Or I could just return it.

For example, the original 6427872 was the assembly line part and was 1968 Camaro V8 only. The service part 6428099 was 1968 Camaro V8 and 1968 Nova 327 and 350 only. Then, GM superseded it to 6428666 which was 1971 Nova with 350 2bbl only! After that, they superseded it to 6428845, which was listed as 1968 Camaro V8, 1968 Nova with 327 or 350, 1969-1970 Nova with 350 2bbl, 1969 Camaro and Nova with 396, 1969 Camaro 350 with 2bbl, 1969 Camaro with 302, 1970 Nova with 396 and 1970 Chevelle station wagon with A/C!!! So you can see, this part has been around the block MORE than a few times.

The 19179532 doesn't show up in any of my books, but a Google search shows it's for 1971 Nova and 1972 Nova and Pontiac Ventura. It "might" fit, but who knows! After the first or second super-session, I would start questioning it!

Ed, the 19179532 is what my good friend of a parts guy told me years ago and that is what I used for our 68. And it was a perfect match in outward looks and bends. The box was AC Delco dated 1995 and was told a few years ago they were no longer available but not sure it that is true or not. The float part used different material but what I could note different would be inside the tank.

Chick that number is what is below the one I was looking at on that link which came up when I searched the 6428845.  The 6428845 is the one that shows up all the time at the usual parts vendors as original GM opposed to the repro.  I don't know which number supersedes which, other than what Ed shows. If it's the same part, many seem to be available, but it's tough to know exactly which # you are getting.  Trouble is mine looks and works fine but somebody cut off the output end of the tube so it's too short to use the original hose to the line.

I checked today. 6428845 is superseded by 19179532 and is still available. Now, whether its still made as nice as the one Chick shows I can't say.

Good deal John! For everyone's info, I was surprised when I received my sending unit years ago that it was "made in China" and do not remember exactly but at the time I thought it was expensive.

The pictures I've seen look just like Chick's.  Whether they are an accurate portrayal is another matter.
