tachometer wiring 67
« on: May 20, 2017, 05:31:37 PM »
I have a 67 , it had a factory tach that had the guts removed before i got the car- so not sure if it had a factory tach or not.  i have a newer electronic dist with a tach output terminal that is not connected . I installed a new reproduction factory tach. it shows the rpm when cranking and drops to 0 as soon as it starts. the back of the tach is attached to the printed circuit only. Can i pick up the factory wiring and install it to that tach terminal?

i did find the original distributor wiring by the wiper motor as listed in another post. 3 wires that were attached to the original dist.

I don't know a lot about 67s but usually you need a tach car specific printed circuit for the factory type tach to work. I have a wiring diagram that shows how this works. When I get home I could send a copy in a pm.

1967 there was only one printed circuit gauges included.
1968 there was one printed circuit board for regular and one for tic-toc-tach installations.
The harness went through the bulkhead connector and came out as a brown wire up by the coil.
You can extend that to your ignition box and connect it to the legacy tachometer port since old tachometers can only work with GM HEI or need to on a legacy port and or use a tachometer filter designed for old analogue tachometers.

i have the brown wire from the original harness.  i will run it to the tach port of the hei tach port on the distributor.  I bought a tach filter when i ordered the new tach from classic.  i am thinking of trying the brown wire connection first.  should i put in the tach filter now -or- my thought is wait and see how it works. it is good to know that there is only one printed circuit board.

i connected the brown wire that was originally connected to the neg.side of the coil to the tach connection on the newer distributor.  IT WORKS!   thanks for the help.

Great news.  Wiring sometimes can be a real pita.
