1967 camaro rs with 283?

i have owned a 1967 Camaro rs for about 30 years. spending a bit of time doing research that was not available when i got it. I am brand new to this site! My car was built in nov. of 1966 in van nuys. the motor that it came with is block stamped v0329go. a few sites that i have visited list that as a 283 with A.I.R for a full size/or camaro!  It doesn't seem like this engine is recognized as a Camaro motor. but yet when you read the history of the z28 which cam out in Dec. of 66 there is a memo that lists Piggins as driving a "high performance 283 camaro" The car is a factory air car with the pulleys for the air even when the air was removed. it also still had the high output alternator.  I know there is a lot of discussion about the 283 in Camaro's other than the few that were for export. does anyone have history of when the z28 was in " the works" ? are there any proven 283 in Camaro's other than exports? Any chance that this motor was the original? also what does that A.I.R. stand for?  Thanks

To the best of my knowledge no Camaro ever left the factory as a normal production car with a 283 engine.  A 283 might have been used in pre-production test Camaros but never released to the public.  AIR stands for air injection reactor, another name for what is commonly called a smog pump.  This was an emissions control system that came on certain Camaros especially those bound for sale in California.

The car was purchased used in the 80's from California and has a blue california plate in the trunk date 1970. So the smog pump makes lots of sense. I have sent the money in to get the original dealer info that is now offered- waiting for that answer.  As to the 283 I had decided that it was not original but then i see a few odd things that make me wonder. perhaps someone else will know something. thanks for the quick reply!

No, V0329GO is for a 283/195 with Powerglide from a 1967 full size car. Yours was assembled on March 29th, 1967. (That web site has a lot of incorrect information regarding the Camaro engine applications!)

What would you want to know? 5 of the first 50 cars had a 283 in them - 2 with powerglides, 2 with M20, 1 with 3 speed manual. They were used for various testing purposes and eventually sold.
No other US-built Camaros had a 283.

Kurt, in regards to the OP original question of this thread and the Piggins comment, and your info about those 5, were those early ideas surrounding the Z/28 platform and what it would include? Curious since it seems there were so many engine choices.

Maybe the cost was negligible to use the 283, and it was more cost effective to go with the 327, since they were phasing the 283 out?
(noticed they also had the 230 and 250 inline 6. )

Were there any big block cars in the first 50? or any other (semi-radical) options or ideas that didn't make it into regular production?
Also why 50? seems like a big number just for test mules,

Big blocks and Z28s were not available until later in the model year.
