Steering box is a sign but not proof of being a Z28.Just start making a list of what parts with the car are correct for a Z28. The more the better.Real proof is the drivetrain. Again, the more correct parts you have will improve your case of it being a Z.I would have to go back but is the axle original and what code?

It's a multi leaf 12 bolt, BW code. It has 1981 dated 4.10 gm gears in It, but 1968 dated 4:56's in a box.I have no clue if it's the original housing or not.
Chris, I went ahead and looked through the posts and pics. I am 99 percent confident it is a Z28. That is the correct axle for the car in my opinion. What are the dates on the ring and pinion? An inspection and report by Jerry M. would be enough proof for anyone.
Yes you could get 4.56 with SS. L78 and L89.
Those would probably be original. Date spread is a little larger than I would expect (Feb pinion, March ring gear, June assembly). But they are probably OK and are not common.
