I always figured Z28s were always D80. I'm sure that's not the case though.

Lots of Z's did not have D80. Mine didn't. But they all do now!

Some of that is guys adding it to their Camaro (all first gen), but specifically with the Z, there is a wide spread belief that all Z cars came with spoilers and the cowl hood. I bet if you asked people and owners at a all around car show, most people wouldn't even know that the cowl hood was only an option on the 69. Just like people think all Z cars came with the console gauges.
You could have a very original low option Z, next to a highly optioned clone, and most people would flock to the clone, and not be aware that it was a creation, but discount the original and think it is just wearing the emblems, because it doesn't have the eye catching options.( just my 2 cents, from what I have observed)

Not that they couldn't have been added in the 70s or early 80s before we got it, but I have no reason to believe that's the case. The rear end, transmission and everything else, but the block is original to the car. Original heads etc. It's far from a "survivor", but a majority of it is original.

Start the original one up.. and let it idle a bit..    that should help!~

Well you know what I mean. As we all know there are no base model first gen Camaros, out there now. Seems every Camaro is a SS, Z/28, or badged as something it originally wasn't.

That's why I'm not a big fan of clones using the Z28, SS, Yenko badges etc. Build a nice car that looks exactly like what you'd like to have, but why badge it as something it isn't? Enjoy it for what it is. JMO...

Well I understand part of it now a days. With the prices of some of these cars getting ridiculous, I can see if a guy on a budget wanted a Z, SS, Yenko, pace car etc.
and he had a plain jane, I can see swapping a motor and switching some emblems, or what ever. (Some of these guys are just honest low budget guys)
I think there has been so much of this though, it has muddied the water, and most people don't know real vs re-creation.

That side of it I completely understand. If I didn't get lucky enough to get the ones I have, I would build a kick ass Camaro, maybe a clone, but I wouldn't badge it.

I have a dart block 383 that I keep looking for a clean car to put it in. If I found a base car I would leave without emblems or stripes. Probably swap out the transmission and axle but the rest would stay a sleeper!!

I agree with you guys.  If I were to build a clone, or whatever you wanted to call it, I would just do the mechanical stuff and leave the stripes, badging, etc. off it, would probably put on a cowl hood though but only if it was a '69.  My '69 Z came originally from the factory with no spoilers and no cowl hood, but some previous owner added these to it.

Just my 2 cents. Of all the Camaro's I own, none of them has a cowl hood. The 67 is all original with one repaint with new seat covers and carpet. The 68 SS BB does have the rear spoiler because the holes were all ready there. I built the other 68 coupe to look like a Z28 because I did not think I would ever own one and the Seafrost green looks so much better with white rally stripes. Yes I did put the rear spoiler on.  The 68 Z28 that I got last year will be built as close to original as I can. No console no spoiler so it will be one of those that people walk by looking at the "Blinged" out clones.

My cowl hood was added 35 years ago, and I'm not taking if off!. I like it too much. The original flat hood with the original paint is in the garage. Car always had spoilers. Console, but no gauges. And standard black steering wheel with the RS center emblem. I know that's "rare" today!
