Whats it worth? 396/4 speed clone
« on: January 18, 2017, 09:28:29 PM »
What's a 1969 SS clone car worth?  Very nice restoration, just completed, no miles, nice options and colors.  Assume a high quality build, but started a small block/automatic car and is now a 396/4 speed, M20, 3.73 posi.

It isn't advertised as a clone and I don't have proof it is.  So I don't want to stir anything up.  I guess I just need to know what value is lost.  I know what a 396/4 speed car of this quality should bring, so how much is lost since it isn't original.

Let's say its a $60k car if factory built big block/4 speed.  What's the same car worth if cloned?

Or, try this.

https://littlerock.craigslist.org/cto/5942218044.html

This car is advertised as a clone, is a 454 and has an exhaust that I'd ditch from day one.  If a factory built 396/4 speed car and in original condition, maybe this car is worth something in the $40k's.  I can't imagine this car pulling anything close.  So, how much value is lost by building the car into something it wasn't.  Maybe its not easy to put a number to that.........

I've been looking at a car that was thought to be original, but learned it isn't.  Now trying to decide what to offer, or to just walk away.

I am sure you think the car looks very nice. To an educated eye, not so much. If that is a clone, person who orchestrated it was not interested in an accurate portrayal, so is it really a clone when so much is wrong or just someone's interpretation and, therefore, just a modified car?

Maybe that is an accurate portrayal in the sellers eyes...
I would agree, not so much clone, more just a modified car.

Darrell your car may indeed go for 32k or more, I think this one is more like less than 30k IMO

That's not the car and I never said this one looked nice.

Listen! It was you that put up this car's link. What am I or anyone else supposed to think other than this car is the specific car you ask about? You may want to take a reading comprehension course as NO one said you said " this one looks nice". I did notice your description of the car, you ask about , you say it has 3.73 rear gearing whereas the car in the link has 3.08(claimed). Other than that small detail, there is nothing said from the beginning of this topic which states the linked car is not the car you ask about, so pardon my assumption.
If not already said, welcome to the site.

If someone did a really nice job and used all or mostly original parts they may get more than one built primarily with reproduction or aftermarket parts. That could make the difference between a $20k clone and a $40k example, IMO. But, as EVERYONE will tell you, you have to know what you're looking at.

I think some comments have been misunderstood..  The facts are; as big as this world is, everyones opinion on what is considered a nice, decent or show stopping car is gonna slightly differ..  So with that said..  AGAIN....   Without seeing any pictures of the car in quesiton there is a large range you  have to consider..  If you dont want to post pics then you are unfortunately on your own to do your own research and in the end if the number that you throw out there makes you feel comfortable who gives two jack shits as to what anyone else thinks..??..  I think the opinions in this thread have been valid but again we are picturing a car in our head and not in reality.

Did any of that make any sense at all?  If you do decide to buy it then post some pics!!!!   ;D

Thanks guys.  I think this gets me in the ballpark.  I'll probably just walk away from it.

The link was posted because it was a known clone car for example.  I thought it was pretty clear, but maybe I was wrong.

I don't care what anyone else thinks, until I want to sell it.
