Chrome shifter ball on what 69 models
« on: December 20, 2016, 03:34:56 AM »
There's a thread over at TC concerning the stupid high prices of original chrome shifter balls like they only came on Z's or something.  According to the following, the chrome ball would have been on all 69 4 speed cars with a console. Is that right or am I reading in something that is not there?

It's been a while since I've been on the site and I realized after the fact  that I posted in the wrong forum. Please move.

ALL cars (3 speed AND 4 speed) that received the optional D55 Console got the chrome shifter ball. There were 243,085 Camaros built in 1969, and of that, 156,225 came with the console (and therefore the floor shifter). That's almost 65 percent!

Not correct Ed. That number (156k) is console equipped which included automatics. Combined 3 & 4 speed production  was around 95k. Of those 95 k, certainly a significant number had no console. Even if a little more than 1/2 those (say, 50k based on manual trans production or use 80k based on console production) had a console and manual trans, that is a significant amount of shift knobs. Now, consider many of those cars are wrecked and destroyed, many felt the chrome knob got too hot in the sun, so aftermarket handles replaced originals, add 30 years of restoring and replacing original parts and then it becomes apparent that supply is less than demand these days as many, knowing better, want the correct part for their car.

Yep, I didn't think of automatics. Sorry about that.
