Instrument Cluster from Late 69 Z/28 (11A)
« on: November 26, 2016, 05:15:40 PM »
I picked up this really nice instrument cluster/dash from a late build 69 Z/28.  It was an 11A build with a VIN of 9N710xxx.

It is complete with the wiring harness and heater control, all in really nice shape.

I was hoping to find some distinguishing features related to the tach, but I'm not sure if there are any.  One thing that seemed maybe a little odd was two tags on the side, one on top of the other.

The paper is pretty brittle but if I pull up on the top tag, you can see an ink stamped number on the underneath tag.  The top tag is blank in that area.

Does the application of the top tag somehow relate to the updated tach that happened late in the build cycle?

Not a lot of info out there (that I have found) so I thought I would see what you guys thought.

I've seen the two tags many times. No idea why.

Nice piece, especially the very late 6.5k-8k tach; center fuel gauge too - so the donor car didn't have U17.
How did you come across that, and knowing the VIN?

The guy had lots of stuff for sale from the car. Probably due to an accident, but I don't know that for sure.  I wish it was a U17 instead, but I'm happy to find it .

I keep a little "library" of trim tag pictures with VIN's, and he was nice enough to provide a picture of both.

I had to dig into the tach for a closer look. :)

For future reference:

I haven't looked at other tachs so I'm not sure if the date signifies 9/19/69 or just 9 of 1969.

Steve, My tach was date coded  '197 69' which I took to be a Julian date...  my car is a mid Sept '69 production.

That's interesting.  This doesn't seem to follow that date code method at all.

Seen multiple carrier stickers often, Just assumed the label gun feed two but usually only the top one has the rubber stamp date code.
The date code on the Tachometer is not off the track. They used the purplish grocery store stamp ink most of the time.
