Nothing on that VIN. You are in the same boat as a lot of people.
Engine and/or transmission missing is pretty common. Axle typically stays with the car - unless it has been messed with A LOT. And once the axle is gone, proving things gets more difficult without documentation. That is my experience.
Check the axle date and code, then post or send direct to me and I can let you know if it is typical. If it is, that may be original to the car, and then not an SS. Holes can be drilled, so the Muncie hole is a clue, not definitive proof.
Are you thinking it was a small block or big block? Have you checked the radiator, heater box, cross member? Have you looked for the rear proportioning valve? The link to the 1968 model ID page is below.
