Database?
« on: November 22, 2016, 04:39:21 AM »
Hi,
My name is Jesse. I recently bought my dream car which is a 68 camaro.  I'm new to this site as well as the camaro world. I've been reading and from what I've gathered there is a non-public database of which I may be able to find some info of my car? Or am I wrong?

I have pictures of the car from a long time ago with original paint and it shows to be a SS. But unfortunately it doesn't have the original engine to prove this. If this database exists, who do I contact to see if there is anything I can learn about my car?

VIN# is 124378N339015. I know it's a V8 car for sure but hoping for more info.

Thanks in advane.

Thats not the database he is referring to..  KurtS or bcmiller will reply at some point to see if your vin is in the database.  Many are but there are also still many that are not.  The site above will give you the dealership that ordered your car and what day it left the Norwood plant.

While you wait for a reply get the transmission stampings and differential stampings and post pics of them if you dont mind.  Or if you cant figure out how to post the pics just email them to me and I will add them to the thread.  Just reference the thread in the subject line of the email.

Cook_dw,
I would gladly post the pics you've requested but from what I have read my transmission is a warranty replacement.  The numbers show it to be. Muncie M20 but a 69 model instead of a 68. Also there is no VIN stampings on it all. They don't appear to have been ground off, just never been stamped

I take it this is your car?

http://classiccarsmark.com/chevrolet/82180-1968-chevrolet-camaro-350-4-speed.html

So does it still have a 10bolt?  Multi leaf or mono?

Also just because you have an old photo do not assume that the car is one thing or another..

Case in point.  Its wasnt a RS/Z but a L34 SS/RS.  Pic was from late 70's - early 80's.

Yes the link is my car. It has a 10 bolt but again, no vin numbers on it or anything to prove it is original to the car. It does have multi leaf springs and riv nuts  in rear fenderwell. It does gave the "muncie hole" in the firewall. And you're right about assuming from an old picture, I guess it's just wishful thinking on my part that it is a SS.

Keep looking and studying.  If the muncie hole is there that is a good sign.  Post pics.

Most of my pics are on my computer which I won't be near for a while. The car is completely stripped right now so I'll send what I have on my phone.

Well it won't let me from my phone. Says file is too large

If my car where in this database, what information would it likely tell me?

Nothing on that VIN. You are in the same boat as a lot of people.

Engine and/or transmission missing is pretty common.  Axle typically stays with the car - unless it has been messed with A LOT.  And once the axle is gone, proving things gets more difficult without documentation.  That is my experience.

Check the axle date and code, then post or send direct to me and I can let you know if it is typical.  If it is, that may be original to the car, and then not an SS.  Holes can be drilled, so the Muncie hole is a clue, not definitive proof.

Are you thinking it was a small block or big block?  Have you checked the radiator, heater box, cross member?  Have you looked for the rear proportioning valve? The link to the 1968 model ID page is below.

Another thing is you could pay the $ and get the original selling dealer from the link provided for NCRS docs, and then try to find information from the dealership if it still exists.  But that would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

As for pics, you need to reduce the size to 200 KB or less to attach.  Or host them somewhere else and link to them.

My axle code is:     JB G113 24. It's not on the list that I've seen on this site before. None of those start with a "jb". That's what made me think it is not original to the car. Pics will come as soon as I have access to my computer after the holiday. I'm beginning to have my doubts about the car but that's ok. It's still my dream car haha.

JB G113 24 is a 1972-1975 Nova 10 bolt non-posi axle. Depending on the year, it was either a 2.73 or 3.08 ratio, so yes, it's not original to the car.

I know it is a 3.08. I took the diff cover off and got the tooth counts off of the ring gear. So this car has had a lot of parts changed it seems. Engine, trans, and rear end. Seems I have hit the ultimate road block haha.

Any more suggestions on places to look would be great! At this point I think I'm just going to build the car to what I want it to be.

I appreciate each of yalls input and advice.

Would that make it an 8.5" rear?  IF so, it's a decently strong rear, much stronger than the 8.2...

Well, 3.08 narrows it down to either 1973 or 1974, but at this point I don't think it's important. And yes, it's an 8.5" axle.
