1968 Z28 engine code help
« on: October 04, 2016, 06:03:31 AM »
Hi,

I am looking at this 1968 Z28 for sale. It has an original numbers matching engine which is off the car being sold with it. I am a bit concerned with the engine code as it seems to have an extra digit in it. Here are the numbers:
Engine:
18L317667 - partial vin
V01207MO - seems to have an extra digit that doesn't belong there?
3914678

VIN:
124378L317667

also, trying to understand if the engine dates are correct for the vin. Can someone please help with this as well?

buyer is asking 39K for this car, is this a reasonable price? its restored fairly well and has a 383 motor w/ a 4 speed in it right now and comes with this original motor.

I appreciate any and all help!!! Thank you!

correct block casting for a '68, 2 bolt, 302.  Stamp does have an extra "0" to the right of the Flint "V".  You could clean the pad & check for broach marks, but IMO it's a re-stamp.

The problem with '68 Z-28s is no X code - so without paper work you should price the car as just a regular '68 Camaro.

Note: Edits made as requested.

Remove the paint with paint stripper and NOT sandpaper, but my initial thoughts is a restamp.

So the extra O next to the V is not uncommon?

if the owner did let me strip the paint of the pad, would exactly would i be looking for?

also, you said as far as the price goes to treat it like a regular camaro. i just saw an RS sell for over 30k. do you think this car would be worth 33-35k as is? here is the link to it: http://www.specialtysales.com/vehicles/1968-chevrolet-camaro-10261

No, it's VERY uncommon. I think there's one or two like that out there, but I don't remember if they're real or not.

Broach marks. Post a picture and we should be able to tell you if it's real or not.

Asking for price opinions on a car from a web site is impossible. You need to go look at it. Or have someone knowledgeable on Camaros go look at it for you.

It's a restamp in my opinion too.

That's a bad restamp IMO.
