Vince my wife is also is ND fan. So I second smoke the irish in football season, and then I.U. and Butler during basketball season.

Being born in and living my whole life in California I sometimes wonder how I became such an Irish fan, but I can remember the 1966 national championship season under Ara, those gold helmets, and this teen kid was so impressed by it all that no other team ever caught my heart like they did.

Vince, you must have missed the game between ND and Michigan State that year??   The one where they were tied with several minutes to go??  and NEITHER team made an effort to WIN the game, instead.. both played it safe and kicked back and forth more than once to end the game tied..  Meanwhile, Alabama went undefeated and untied, but the writers voting, most from the north, voted ND and MI State ahead of Bama?   

I'm very glad that teams now have to PLAY other teams, and win, to win the NC...

Gary I am no big know it all, but there are many teams who go undefeated and are not ranked #1, it also comes down to strength of schedule.
Alabama only faced one nationally ranked opponent (# 6 nebraska), vs ND faced off against 4 nationally ranked teams. Also Alabama got penalized in 65 for giving out 42 scholarships to freshmen when the NCAA rules only allowed for teams to give out 40. So this along with the northerner sports writers  view of segregation, may have also contributed.
