That for whatever reason might be that it was a fad in the 70,s to run your back up lights. Usually off a toggle switch. For some reason it was thought to be cool. I did it on my 67 Chevelle.
In New York, it meant you were lookin to race.

X2 it was the "cool thing" to do,  BITD. And, it did signal that you were looking for a race. My car, as well, had the toggle below the dash. The guys with the cool fast cars, as soon as we would turn onto the short lane were the Big Boy was, the reverse lights came on as we turned into the lot. Apologies, did not intend to Hi-jack, but added to these comments. Here is a little window into my past from my sign collection:

Nice sign Bentley....Our hot spot was the Burger Chef when in Delaware but just circling the Square when in Sunbury. Always found plenty of action between racin' and the girls.......Good times!

I suppose all of us that are old enough recall fondly our 'cruising' nights in the 60's and 70's... (cruising thru the burger joints, looking for girls, hot cars to race, and girls...    :)

When I first bought my car, the PO had installed headers and disconnected (and removed, darn it!) the reverse linkage from the trans to the bellcrank. For awhile I didn't have backup lights until I realized he'd removed them since they were on all the time. So then I had to remember to rotate the collar on the sterring column to turn them off while driving. I started a trend of "flashing" my back-up lights to "wink" at girls while cruising. I was later told several guys were blowing fuses, trying to figure out how to do this!

'blowing fuses'... made me think of an old story told in USAF electronics school about Micro Farad and Milli Amp...  :)    (Don't ask if you don't know it).. :)
