V32 Rear Guards on 69 models
« on: May 17, 2016, 08:46:04 PM »
I recently have been going through my original & untouched Dlxe. rear bumper guards for 69 year. I noticed that they are factory painted a low gloss black where the lower bolt attaches. Just though I would pass along this information, a FYI, to those that like the details. Some feedback if this is consistent is welcome. one set on Nov. car, other Dec. (Nor).

Weren't the tail panels on the SS cars painted black ? But we're the bumpers installed before the tail panel was blacked out or just maybe a car lot did it ..

Hey Ban do you have an SS car? There is some good info on the rear panel paint:
http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=62078&page=all
and this thread:http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7348.15
So why would you think that the 69 BB cars rear panel were painted at the dealer? On top of that -with the bumpers on???

We like contributions from all members here in the CRG, most of which is based on experience or knowledge, I would just like to hear where you got this info from.

thanks buddy  :)

I have a set with paint on them like that and often wondered what that was about.  You're talking about the small piece that sticks out the bottom where the bolt goes through.
I always thought it might be some kind of attempt by GM to hide it, but thought it was strange myself because it would only look right on a black car (I think)  Any other color and I would think those black sections would be noticeable.    So I didn't know if it was a factory deal or not, and never investigated.

Haha, I log in and now I see your pics.   Yep, I have a set like that in a box.  The set on my Z doesn't have any remnants of paint that I can see though.  If it did it's worn off for sure.

I have a set of rusty originals and they have the same black paint on them. I don't think it was a SS blacked out panel thing. Mine came off a Z28. Also Blacked out rear panels didn't extend below the rear bumper that far. Probably just a GM thing to hide the bracket part to not distract from the bumper guard itself.

Does it make sense to everyone that all those standard non-V32 rear bumperettes would also get the same treatment if it was a factory thing?

Show us the evidence, and yes, I will believe it. I think it was a manufacturer's doing on the V32's.

Wouldn't the blackened tail panel have been painted on the Fisher side, before any bumper installation? Isn't that part of the meaning of X22/X66?

Sounds like it's becoming a question of whether the car had optional V32 or not.

On Z's these guards were standard, yet Spooky says his guards from a Z are blacked out.

Interesting, but I can't answer that question specifically myself.  The extra really nice set I have I grabbed at a swap meet and they are blacked out, but I have no idea what they came off of.  My Z at a glance doesn't appear to have any black, but now I may just have to remove a bolt and have a closer look.

Something I noticed in the pictures, appears the blackout was done while bolts were installed which seems odd.  Would that mean they were already installed on the car when the blackout process occurred??  That would require masking the tail panel off and that sounds like more assembly line work that wouldn't otherwise be necessary.
Removing my bolts may not show me anything in that case.

Okay, had a close look at the guards on my Z.  Sure enough, looking up inside that bracket where it is more protected, there is black.  Looks satin in nature.  Where it has flaked off is shiny chrome, wasn't even scuffed, so no wonder the paint didn't stick around long.  Thanks kolektor, your post got me curious enough to look closer.

That answers the question for me.
