68 RS rocker paint process questions
« on: April 29, 2016, 12:03:45 AM »
My shop has questions about how to proceed with the RS rocker paint.

We've already established that the paint is applied through the middle of the drilled holes for the trim before the trim is mounted. We've also established that it's done before the fenders go on. So:

Does anyone have the steps for painting the lower rocker panels the semi-gloss black?
How well is it masked?
Does the bottom of the backside of the door get painted completely black as well or is it only overspray?
If before fenders go on, how much of backside of lower fender gets painted?

Thanks for any assistance anyone can offer.

This link has some past history. Th rockers were painted by Fisher and the fenders painted by Chevy. Sometimes the black edge between the rockers and fenders didn't match up.

Thanks Mike! Reply #7 was most helpful for 68. From the pictures I could discern:

The doors were only masked on the exterior and around the pinched edge, any overspray that got behind the door settled where it may.
The fenders were masked and sprayed exterior only
Both front and rear wheelwells were masked and didn't get any overspray
Body color extends under the sill plate and the transition seam was more on the horizontal surfaces than the vertical ones

Other things that will be helpful is the cut on the bright wheel well trim is different for the RS and the base of the door striker is body color and not all bare metal.
