I see the 3 out of the 5 like you do and there will be a lot of junk going to the bone yards in the coming years, like many of the radical custom cars of the early 60's. I sadly don't see rat rods going away, but continuing to grow. Cant stand them, they keep ruining all the good vintage tin. Its getting really hard to find savable original metal for my 33 ford pickup.

Stance is probably here to stay as well and to think cutting and/or heating the coils ruined our rides, these "stanced" cars are just stupid.

3 of the 5 ? I figured everything but rat rods would be garbage. Not all rat rods are heavily modified original bodies. I have seen guys with restored cars painting them flat black removing the fenders and hoods, and "wala" instant rat rod. Some are hacked, but back in the 50's and 60's is when that look got invented, so they are just paying homage to that time. So much so, that they dress and do there hair to resemble the greasers and hood rats. The tattoos I could do without....but thats just me.

well rat rods in the northwest have then taken a huge drop in quality because a rat rod around me is something I wouldn't dare drive because of questionable welding and no thought process of slapping parts on a car. Most are good old bodies that have been heavily butchered. There pretty clear line between a traditional build and a rat rod.

Bentley I love it, but if I saw it going down the street I would refer to it as a rat rod. The traditional hot rods to the best of my knowledge, were either chopped, or channeled, but not both. The reason being is I think you were allowed one mod for salt flat racing. Another reason was it depended on what part of the country you lived in. Stereotypically the west coast had more chopped and ran high boys, and the east coast tended to channel as whole. The variations were wide though. I have hundreds of Rod & Custom mags from the 50's and 60's, (comic book size), as well as the first Car Craft, Motor trend, Hotrod. While some of the best made the pages, there are many examples.
Just like some here saying "they look unsafe at any speed".....almost verbatim from what the squares said back then

Bentley's rod is whatever he wants to call it.. 

In my area, I see mainly two variants of 'rat rods'... 1) radical, rusty, attention getting, and 2)   A nice classic rod with maybe an 'indian blanket interior' and 'hot rod black paint' or 'just primered/waxed/etc paint. (a 'lo buck hot rod)

All those other types or groups can be lumped into one group with a six letter label, the first three being STU .. and the last three being PID...    (What some people do to get attention!)...

Is that 8x2's on top of that old hemi? looks great! Do you have them all running? My grandfather and I have 6x2's in his original 60's kustom 56 chevy.

If you look at the valve cover at the top of the pic you may be able to make out that both the covers say, "Chrysler Industrial" , kind of rare v.covers.
