4053 Holley carb replacement
« on: February 14, 2016, 05:27:17 AM »
Hi

I have a stock 69Z with the original 4053 DZ carb.  I wouldn't mind something a little more street-able (smaller).  Several years ago, JohnZ had recommended the 600 Holley #0-80145 as a great bolt-on replacement.  That carb is no longer made, however, and the tech guys at Holley must be 19-year olds or something cause they don't know either.  What's the current replacement?  The HP series 650 (PN 0-80541-1) has also been recommended to me.  Thoughts?  Bear in mind I ain't a tech guy.  Thanks!

Jano those shoebox carbs are junk.  Same as the old 4010 Holleys..  If you want a smaller carb then go with either 0-80570 or 0-80670 Street Avengers with an electric choke.  Same inlet fuel locations and has a rear metering block same as the 4053..  Regardless you will have to tune the carb to the car..  Just $0.02 coming from a former Holley tech service guy..  ;)

oops! Just saw it in the flyer this morning, didn't read into it. Agree, junk carbs. Thought it was from the series you mentioned.

Holley private labels those carbs for Summit.  Summit makes nothing on their own that I'm aware of..    Kicker is summit deals with the warranty & tech support on their name brand stuff.

Get you a good used or rebuilt List 4776 600 cfm double pumper. Plentiful, still made, mechanical secondaries, smaller bore size than the 4053 carbs, but still flows very well, plus at a glance it looks like the 4053 (it's a 4150 series carb anyway). Bolt up, no hassle, inexpensive - and just my opinion.

Steve

Steve that is a great choice but the double pumper wont work with the factory air cleaner.  Will still work but just need to run an aftermarket breather on the pass valve cover and run an aftermarket air cleaner base.

I used to run an 4777 850 DP on my Z (with the open element stock cleaner), but then again the tube had been removed on the passenger side and a breather substituted on the PS valve cover. Are you thinking the linkage won't clear ? The vacuum pot on the 4053 passenger side sticks out farther than the secondary linkage on a DP that side -

My curiousity is up now - I'll have to dig the 4777 out and match it up on the intake/cleaner to see the interference(s).

Thanks,
Steve

The tube on the air cleaner interferes with the mech secondaries.  I removed the tube on the green 69 when I installed an ultra HP 750.  Other than that it'll work.

Come on, I know Summit/Jegs don't make parts.

Have heard nothing but good about the HP series. Making good numbers on the dyno right out of the box. More race bred.

I wasn't singling you would..  Lol. Just making a general statement. HP Series are hands down the best race carb Holley has..  I can't remember exact #s but when I who he'd from a 4053 on my old 69 I gained HP & TQ on the chassis dyno.  I miss having that luxury.  :(  My HP carb was a half breed.  750 base with a straight leg booster.  I loved it for its tune ability.

The 4777 is a good drag strip carb for the 69Z for sure. That is what I'm running now on my 69. I believe its a 650 CFM and I'm running the re-pop ZL-2 base with the double 45 degree bends in the vent tube to clear the secondary pump arm. I have it so the air door flapper is sync'd with the secondarys.
