Nice fitting headers on a Z28
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:49:24 AM »
I saw these Doug's headers on a Z28 recently. With power steering and the reverse lockout linkage!
They fit really nice and have a thick flange so they won't warp.

Summit has them, in ceramic, painted, and un-coated ($640, $480, $470 respectively) with primary tube in 1-5/8" or 1-3/4").  If I KNEW they would fit with the rev lockout (without leaving parts off), then I think I'd order a pair.   I have a new ceramic coated pair of headers (Hedman?) that I am not going to use because they interfered with the rev LO and LH one nudged the floor once installed.

Did you happen to see how far they hung below the car (or even better, perhaps a picture of below) - as compared to the bottom of the subframe?

Those look extremely nice and would be worthwhile for my next purchase/experiment.  Unfortunately, other brands I have tried in the past always seemed to end up hanging way too low.

Charlie,
I didn't look at how low they hung.

Gary,
Like I said, the reverse lockout was installed

Does the 'fit with rev LO' on either of these headers depend upon the primary tube size (1-5/8" vs 1-3/4")..

PS.  Back in '69-70 some of my friends who were interested in drag racing their 68-69 Z28's installed 2.0" tube primary Hookers...

L78 Steve...thanks for that! My '69 Z had Appliance headers when I bought it way back in '77. I switched to Hooker Super Comps but the reverse lockout rod had already been tossed. Now I'll have to pick one up so it functions again. It was always a pain remembering to twist the collar on the steering column to turn off those back-up lights!

I can take pictures if needed.  My reverse LO linkage was missing as well so I figured it wouldn't fit. Cannot remember what caused me to try it but plenty of room with no mods.

Steve, I'll take you up on your offer of pics. I need to climb under my car to see what's left of the linkage. I can buy the complete set-up at Heartbeat, but I may have some of it still on the car. I'm not sure if I can locate pieces separately when I determine what I need.
Thanks!

How do you think they would work with some Dart aluminum angle plug heads?

You would have do ably have to hit it with a ball peen hammer to get the spark plug in and out and re coat the headers when you ar done that has been my experience with the hookers Darrell

Since we are talking headers, my brother is recreating his old day 2 68 427 car. He is determined to use M/T Super Scavengers but none to be found. He bought a new set of Hooker non tuned headers new and cut off the collectors. Using a borrowed unit, he has a metal guru building the collector boxes now. He plans to tuned the headers in the collectors like the old ones did. I will let every know how it works out. Or has anyone tried it before.

Thanks for the pic, Steve, looks like plenty of room. Wish I'd done some research back in the day!
