Penske Camaro replica
« on: November 26, 2015, 04:55:04 AM »
I saw a Penske Camaro replica at the MCACN car show in Chicago last weekend. It is one of the better replicas that I've seen and for good reason. It was built by Ron Fournier, who built the originals starting with the '68s.

Thanks Jon. What's with the red door panels? Was the original like that, I forget?

Doug, the red door panels are correct depending on what race you are talking about. I have also seen blue and black door panels used.

I was guessing they were correct, I just don't remember them. Is this the same Ron Fournier that wrote the book on welding and metal fabrication? If it is I would recommend everyone  should read it.

Is this car being raced currently, or is it just for show?  And how much HP does the engine make?  Sure would like to try it out !

From the pics it looks like it is a bit light in the front end....Maybe missing an iron block?

The owner told me it has not been raced yet but he was considering running it with SVRA back in the Midwest and East. The car had a prop under the frame to hold the car in that position but it is not visible in the pics I took.

My guess it's supposed to be in a "full throttle oversteer" attitude for the display.    Ken

It still looks REAL good. Jon, was Ron able to enlighten you on the original shade of blue? Was it a special mix?

Wow, this is so cool! Looks like they even correctly replicated the rollcage that was unique to this car. Nice job.

Doug, I have not spoken with Ron about the shade of blue but as stated in another thread previously...

"Pat Ryan (who owns the #15 above) says that for Ditzler paint the color codes are...

Sunoco Blue:  12302

Sunoco Yellow:  81229"

Whatever Ron used on this replica, it looks very accurate to the original.

Hi Jon, here is another picture of the Camaro. This shot was taken by Tim Costello.

I hesitated in resurrecting a two year old thread, however in this case it seems the appropriate place to pass along this information. Ron Fournier passed away 9/17/2017. As with many of his generation, he will be missed.
