Is this the correct metering valve for my '68 Z?
« on: October 26, 2015, 03:32:51 PM »
Hello -

Now that I have the brakes torn apart, I decided to rebuild everything, which also include the metering valve.

I recall reading somewhere that there was a slight difference between 67 - 68 valves and a '69 (I know that 70 is different).

Is there a difference?

I've included a picture of my metering valve.  I checked with the Musclecar Research Group when ordering the kit, and the owner said that he wasn't aware of any differences between 67-68 and '69.

Thanks...

Chris

The size of the hex is different. You have the big hex. Don't remember which is which. It may be in the archives.

Quote right out of the Chassis archives -

"The 69 metering valve is similar but slightly larger in diameter than the 67-68 style metering valve."

Makes me wonder if the internals are different as well. I hope the kits work, as I plan on using MRG's kits to rebuild mine -

I've always heard the '68 Z valve was unique - and never heard the '67 valve mentioned at the same time as the '68. I have to go look at mine to compare.

Chris....depends on the build date of your car.  I have a 1968 Z28 with a build date of 07C and it has the same one as the 1969 (the Fat Boy as I call it).  Here is a link that has some additional info on the differences between the early and late versions......

Chicks car is an earlier build date and it has the smaller valve.

Here's a pic of mine, a June car, with my Z11 valve for comparison. I wonder when the transition was made ? Likely July in prep for the '69's ?

Interesting. I'd really like to know if the internals are the same - hope so, considering the MRG statement about being the same -

Nice phosphated "big" nut, but then again, very nice looking brake system. Makes me embarrassed to post pics of mine -

Thank you! To clarify, mine is the small version and yes it is phosphate. Large or the fat boy as Jerry calls it on survivors I've checked are clear zinc (silver looking). This one is on our 69 L78 Nova Survivor I ordered and purchased new. Somewhat hard to see the difference as the body is much fatter. Side by side and it sticks out big time but stand alone pics are more difficult. Thanks again for the compliment!

Chick,

Mine are so grungy I can't really compare them. I assume this one is like my Z11's above ? The end-on shot of yours threw me off, but since you pointed it out, I can see the size differences.

I hope any of mine will turn out like yours - details like that really stand out. I've got to go all the way through the '68 from master to calipers, booster to brake drums. Takes time.

Steve

68CamaroZ28 -

I can see a few differences in yours vs. mine

1) the underside surface for the "out" line mounting area is much smaller on yours, looks to be about 1/8", whereas the underside on mine is about 1/4", which to me would indicate that your valve is fatter than mine

2)  the machined area around the nut, the step between the machined area and the rough casting, looks to be larger on yours then on mine, which would speak to a fatter valve

Since my car is a fairly good example of an original survivor, along with your pics of the fatter valve, I'm going to assume that mine is the origina, or at least correct, metering valve.

The proof will be when I receive the rebuild parts.

Thanks...

Chris

Looks good to me Chris! Your nut appears to be zinc, correct? When was your car built? Have fun!

'68 -

My car was built in the 2nd week of April.

The nut has I think what's called a phosphate coating(?).  Kinda flat grey.  I wire wheeled it before I knew that it would hurt the original finish, but I ended up sand blasting the nut with coal slag, then rubbing it down with bearing grease to keep it from rusting, and the finish looks pretty darn close.

See my newer post.  The "quick brake check to make sure the car is safe to drive" has evolved into a "full brake system overhaul using 100% correct factory date coded parts".  As usual.

The nut was indeed phosphate treated.
 Here is an old thread that has a pic from my '67 with traces of the old finish intact;

Oh good news as I thought it was clear zinc which would be wrong or contrary to what I've learned, seen and have been told by experts. Easy one to fist as on my restoration I originally made mine clear zinc (wrong) to match what I had observed on original cars but they were all 69 cars but finally got it correct by changing the nut back to phosphate as shown in post #5. Goes to show you we cannot assume from one year to the next things are the same, or even within the year. Mike is correct of course but there might be some late built 68's that have a clear zinc nut.
