69Z Spiral Shocks date and hardware report
« on: October 01, 2015, 04:01:04 AM »
I just removed the spiral shocks that came on my 05A 69 Z today.  They have NEVER been off the car until today!

The rear shocks 3192851 were dated 120 69 and had the staked flat washer bushing stud still in place.  All four of the screws that hold the shock mounting plate to the body were SEMS over a large T, ( actually the horizontal bar of the T went from one side of the head to the other.)  The screw head was recessed.

The front shocks 3192477 were dated 107 69.  All four mounting screws, on the lower A arm were RBW with a horizontal dash under the R and B, and a vertical dash between the R and B.  The W is at bottom center.  Between the horizontal dashes and dead center of the head is a dimple or more like a shallow center drill hole.  The head was also recessed and has a solid flange washer.

I don't know how, but these shocks still have some resistance, and are in decent shape.  I definitely will be calling the NCRS rebuilder, Mr. Dan Patch if he is still in business.

Sorry, no photos.  My printer/scanner/card reader has passed away.

darn you Bryan, thought you were going to ask us (the members ) if anyone could use them!!!
(I have been searching for a good later set like you have for a bit) HAHHAHAHA  ;D

Question if they still have some resistance, why not just run them as is? ( I assume you are not going to be racing the car )

I am intersted in knowing if Dan still does this service though  ;)

Glad the shocks survived all these years with out an owner getting an impulse to change them, and then getting discarded.

Austin,
Funny that you said that, I have been thinking about the possibility of using them as is, I can clean them up and restore the finish myself.  I think it would depend on, if they can be completely rebuilt or not.  I will can Dan in the near future and see what he says.

Yes it is amazing that the shocks didn't get changed.  The car wasn't but 10 years old when I got it, so most of the "Change" would have been on me, and I didn't, so that's how.

So, if anyone is building an 04C to late May Z28, this hardware mentioned above is the born with hallmarks for 05A!

I have seen some originals where the finish isn't to bad, maybe a little soap and water carefully done will do the trick.

I just talked to Mr. Dan Patch shock services.  What he does is takes an NOS spiral shock of the same breed and cuts it open and uses ALL parts to rebuild your 3192851 and 3192477 dated shock.  All that gets used from your shock is your case or housing with your numbers.  The end product will be an (your number) NOS shock for $200.00 each.  Dan Patch Shocks 913-515-3721.

Has anyone had Dan rebuild theirs?  I have a front set and I think the had some rust on the cylinder. I wonder how they would act with a modern set on the rear

OUTSTANDING Bryan!  :)   I saved your post and the PNs you found.. so when/if I find the original shocks from mine that I removed in 1976, I can check the numbers...  :)   I installed Gabriel Stryder adjustables on my car after purchase, and I'm pretty certain I kept the originals, but haven't yet opened the right old box and found them...  :)

PS.  I second the recommendation to clean/reuse them, at least until you get to the point of driving the car and being dissatisfied with their performance...
