Rocker panel molding installation

Hi

I am installing rocker panel moldings on my 69 ss. The moldings had been removed in the past and never put back. Don't know where to put my molding retainer. I do have the Assembly Manual. Its hard to understand exactly where to put the molding. How far is the tip of the molding from the wheel well? How far from the door opening do I put the molding? Does someone have clear measures?

What happened to all the screw holes for the retainer and for the ends of the molding?

When the car was painted in the 80s the moldind was not put back. I can t see where the holes where.

The attachment holes are filled on many cars during the paint process by mistake or purposefully.  Happened to one of mine after repeatedly and specifically pointing those holes out to the shop manager.  Paint guy thought it looked better without the rocker moldings so he took a little "creative license" and filled them all.  Car is still not to the point where I need to locate the holes on the rockers panels and remove the filler, but I am dreading the day.  A buddy filled the holes on his '68 SS because he liked the look.  I don't, but to each his own.

I am in same boat as Jack - same issue need to install and no holes left.- my body guy filled in mirror holes and vinyl top trim studs and holes made everything alot easier for me

Give me a bit and I'll get you pics and dimensions. My originals are off of the car, but all holes are original and untouched. Just need to figure out how to template them -

I can compare old to NOS if you need to reference the channel - if you have NOS molding kits, you won't have to worry -

Use the 3m double sided emblem tape, mine has never moved in the past 3 years, mine were filled in by the painter as well

This may appear a mite crude, but the measurements are accurate. You can base it all from the rocker panel and quarter panel to locate the channel (and the moulding) accurately. I've included a pic of the rearmost mounting bracket (channel) hole; all of the bracket holes are .500" (hole cneterline) below the top edge of the rocker - the rearmost bracket hole is 2.125" forward of the quarter panel edge to the hole centerline. Rear moulding screw hole is 2.500" forward of the quarter edge to the centerline of the screw hole. Installation should be pretty straightforward - bracket locates entirely on the rocker, clip the moulding in place, check the alignment for parallel to the rocker, locate the rear moulding hole 2.500" from the rear qtr. edge, and then drill the last two (front and rear) moulding holes to finish. You can put a dab of paint or sealer on the moulding screws to protect the metal after drilling. Mock it up using these dimensions and see if I got it right.

Be sure and compare the old moulding to a new one if you have one - if you're using a repro, check to make sure all of the bracket holes and the overall bracket dimensions are a match - we've all been burned by poor quality reproductions. If you need addtional pics or info, let me know. I have several sets of NOS if you need dimensional checks -

Steve thats great I need to do this and I also need to blackout the rockers was going to rattle can it but not sure what paint to use, Charlie had sent me pics of an original car and job looks sloppy and poor paint

As Paul Harvey said - now, the rest of the story.

I hope this holds for '68's - my Z was treated to a repaint before I bought it (in black, from British Racing Green), and the bimbos that painted it covered the holes and did not reinstall the moulding. Go figure -
