1969 Camaro X22 cowl vin# question
« on: July 10, 2015, 03:18:15 PM »
I am looking at a 1969 Camaro X22 car. The cowl tag shows 12B which I assume would be a December 2nd week build. The vin series starts with 572XXX which is about 2k after the 569987 ending vin# report for December. The rear end number decodes to 0102 which is January 2nd. Is it possible that this cowl tag is original to this car? From the research I have done I am questioning that this car could have sat for a couple weeks waiting for parts?

For starters....where are you getting the VIN from? If from the engine stamping or the registration then I recommend to check the hidden VIN under the cowl panel to see if it matches. Based on those findings that will help to correlate within the period of the trim tag date.

I got the vin# from the car in the normal spot by the drivers side windshield.

The engine and transmission are gone. The car seems to be a big block, RS car. Nothing seemed odd with the RS lights in the rear bumper, headlight covers, fenders etc. It is a non console column shift originally. Dual fuel lines were there so a 325 horse car but they had been cut off and a new line braided line ran. Car seemed to be a X22 but vin# rear end and cowl just seemed off a little.

The first 2 ZL-1's have a trim tag of 12D and a VIN of 569XXX.  VIN's in the 572XXX range correspond more to a trim tag with 01A which magically corresponds to your rear end date. Something's not right.

From the research I have done I am questioning that this car could have sat for a couple weeks waiting for parts?

Does the car have some unusual option like JL8? I ask, because my car's # is way before this one and it made it off the line on time. But, even if there was a hold up, they would not wait till it was built to assign a VIN #. There is definitely something not right about this car. Just looking at that small area revealed in the picture, I do not see anything that looks right regarding everything  seen around the tag and the color of the firewall itself. The tag, IMO, is real. I suspect trim tag is not for that car or body is re-VIN'd.
If having a BB car is important to you and you want to insure that for investment purposes, I would look at something less modified that has some evidence it is what is on the TT and paper work (real) is always the Holy Grail in owning a pedigreed, documented, Muscle Beast. In lieu of paperwork, if you can find an old codger who has had their car for eons, like me, I think that carries some weight as to documenting by having old pictures of car BITD.
Is the poll for the tag or the car?

You state, "The car seems to be a big block". What do you see on this car that can substantiate your opinion?

I suppose when you ask that question, it makes me think further. It had the plate welded on the frame so it was a dual exhaust car, motor mounts seemed original (even though the engine is not) and the radiator was an original stock 23" which only came on the big block. Of course the plate would have been on any dual exhaust car and someone could have easily found a radiator and motor mounts. At this point I think I am going to pass on this purchase as these cars are so expensive anymore it is quite a bit of money to take a chance that it is legit. I was questioning on the poll whether the tag went with the car.

Are you asking if the tag is legit or repo or if the tag is from another car?

No question in my mind - the VIN and axle are from one car and the tag is from a different car. :(
