Pilot Bushing Installation Depth??

1967 Camaro, SS350, 3 speed Man Trans

Does the pilot bushing (bronze) get installed flush with the crank surface around the hole  or should it be proud by Xmm???

Knock it in until it won't go any farther. Dunno what 'proud by Xmm means.' Just seat it against the crankshaft. Good luck!

Before you install it, make sure the bushing doesn't attract a magnet - the correct bushings are made from Oilite bronze (non-magnetic). There are lots of cheap Chinese counterfeit bushings out there with iron in them than can score the end of the input shaft, and they'll attract a magnet. The correct Oilite bronze bushing is GM #10125896 or Federal-Mogul #PB-656-HD (F-M makes the GM bushing).

My old pilot bushing was the Chinese type as it does attract a magnet. Based on the color of it, it almost looks like it was made out of plain old steel.  Luckily, the bushing has at most 1000 miles on it and the input shaft looks fine. 

I ended buying a LUK replacement clutch/pp (based on your rec JohnZ - thanks!) and the pilot bushing that was included with the kit is the correct Oilite.

Here is a good one for you.... I jacked up my Camaro the end of June, removed the trans/clutch in August, and I am finally getting around to replacing it now because the snow is coming soon (Michigan) and my wife wants to park in the garage again. I am getting too lazy in my old age!!

He wanted to know if the face of the bushing should be flush with the hole in the crank or if it should protrude rearward by "x" number of millimeters.

My next project car will be a Ford... a '32 hot rod.

I was the Viper Plant Manager for six years before I retired, and I have a '67 Corvette and a '69 Camaro.

I start drooling when I see a '32 (I prefer a 3 window) ... 3" chop, flat black and the meanest/loudest engine/exhaust.... the only problem is I would have to sell the Camaro to fund the hot rod, and the Camaro has been part of me for 27 years now.

We're with you, RobF!  I love my Camaro, but any 30s Ford is a great temptation.  Of course, it's not just the cash for the car and resto.  You also have to have a place to store it!

You've got any easy job if you are trying to kill the upcoming Camaro.  GM will do most of your work for you, I'm afraid! Can you tell us what you have worked on???

I've had my '68 for  going on 24 years, Rob. If I wasn't so in love with it I'd have a '32 5-window with a 427 and a Weiand blower, chuckle.  Pumpkin orange with 33" Mickeys out back and littles on the front and roll-pleated black interior. But I could never sell my '68. I'm in the middle of finishing an extension to my shop to put my '87 IROC in, so i can dig too many cars and not enough cash! Boy, Phil, you nailed it.
