Wiper Arm Tool ??
« on: April 29, 2015, 05:52:26 PM »
Can anybody tell me the best tool for removing classic car wiper arms. I have seen 2 or 3 but they seem to be for a more modern car with the clip on the outside... Danny

Look no further. This simple tool has been worth many times over what I paid for it - takes a couple of seconds per wiper arm, does not damage anything, effortless to use.

The only modification I did to it was to add a couple of layers of electrical tape as shown to cushion the metal to metal contact (and keep from marring the wiper arm finish).

You can get these from a number of sources - Camaro Central has them if I remember correctly - pretty cheap -

Steve

Ok, so I bought this one a few days ago. But I don't see how it works. Do you do it sideways? The release tab is under the arm. Well I guess I will pull it from the package and give it a shot. Thanx.. D

You can see the need for the vinyl tape cushion. Slight pressure down on the lever, while picking up slightly under the arm - just slides right off the post. I've used this on junkyard arms that have sat in the weather for years, and they just pop right off. Somebody brainstormed this from need, no doubt about it.

Steve

I have the Lilse tool from my local NAPA store. They ordered it and it came in a day.

My old procedure without the tool was to blanket the hood with towels and pop it off with a screwdriver. Too many close calls on finished cars necessitated the tool!

You can spot that problem on many cars  - look for the telltale screwdriver marks around the hole for the transmission stub - see it all the time, still -

Well thank you to everyone for all the effort. I tried it tonight and they both popped right off. Pretty slick for sure... D

I must be a dunce, but I'm having trouble with this? The wiper arm has a pivot  (like what is shown in the pictures here I think), so when I put my hand under it with the tool on the other end, it just pivots up, and doesn't put any pressure on the arm from the hand side. Am I missing something? I should also note that it looks like the transmissions under the wiper arms have paint on them from a paint job years ago, and maybe that's part of my problem.

The arm only pivots so far, then the tool will put pressure on the release tab and start to work. The picture above is the start position. Install the tool like that, then squeeze.

You may have to wiggle and pull up a little bit to get it to pop off, but it will be firmly in your hand and with an upward force, so as not to damage the paint.

Note: the tool also works as a beer bottle opener in a pinch!
