First 2015 COPO Camaro being auctioned
« on: April 14, 2015, 05:27:50 PM »
This car is a thing of beauty. I wonder what it will sell for.

From the article:
Chevrolet has announced plans to auction off the first 2015 COPO Camaro at the Barrett-Jackson Palm Beach auction on April 18th.

A 'store bought' drag car is not a thing of beauty to us all...  it's all in the eyes of he beholder.. :)
Chevrolet is building/selling an 'off road' car which will not be used on the street???

An expensive bill last time I looked they were about 75K = Corvette money

I like the performance aspect of the the car, but getting a modern day super car( Corvette ) seems like more bang for the buck.

from taking a quick look at that car, I'm doubting if it will be street legal.. *(aren't there requirements about 'visibility' thru the windshield and with that 'COPO billboard' of a raised hood, visibility cannot be that good!)...  Is chevy going into the business of selling 'special purpose, off road' cars?  Is that the mindset of Chevrolet's upper management?   will they be building 'drifter' cars?  hill climb cars?  hmmmmmm....   I'm glad I don't own any GM stock..

I am pretty sure it is not street legal as it does not have all the safety equipment in order to cut weight for the track. So they are building these predominately for the racer, but I'm sure some collectors are ordering them to have a COPO. I am not sure about drifter or Hill climb but they also make a track only( Z/28.R )Again for the racer.

They have built them a couple years and seems like the used ones for sale are 100-120,000. A lot for just a race car. Wonder how they compare with a hellcat

And.. a  'real racer' could probably buy a $5000 Mustang, and with another 10-15K build a drag car that would stomp it....

I don't know where GM gets it's marketing people....   maybe from kindergarten classes??

AND..  if you want a real 'hot rodder built' Camaro drag car.... 153 mph after a quarter in 8.81...  Here's one for 1/4 to 1/3 the $$$ that a friend sent me an email about this morning... :)   - an upgrade to the 'old Mustang drag car' that I referenced earlier... :)  Will that 2015 GM factory built drag car run anything close to that???
The owner might even apply the 'C O P O ' letters to the car for a sale.. :)

1982 Chevy Camaro Drag Race Car, turn key ready to race $35,000-or best reasonable serious offer, must sell, really a great deal at this price, you can't build a car like this for this price. Well I would say just the opposite, their "race" cars are based off factory models. GM is making a few mods and giving customer a few options for drive train in the COPO and then marking it up considerably because of the COPO name and what it famously has represented. So seems like a good business model to me.
Now if they were making the car from scratch and there was a ton of R & D involved and they were losing money I would agree with you.

You sighted buying a mustang, (which I am guessing you meant street car), but Ford also offers a Cobra drag car that is not street legal, and Dodge also offers a Challenger drag only car, for its followers who want to cough up the dough.

Well, thank you Austin..   that was all 'news' to me....  shows how little I pay attention to the advertising they do... :)     Do you know if ANY of those 'factory drag cars' have ever won a race??  :)

Yes they have. Remember they are factory race car , and not a factory sponsored race car. Once they go into private hands its up to the owners to win their race(s) in their specific class in their region. I am sure there are a few other owners who have moth balled the cars as well.

They had a good episode on Velocity that featured Don "The Snake" Prudhomme thrashing a new Cobra factory race car a while back. If you stop by a magazine rack you will see coverage of each car every couple of months and what an owner has done to make one of them ( Dodge, Ford, Chevy) a winner.

I checked and seen a copo run 8.88. I would guess they run more of a super stock class than the older camaro pictured

They're offering LSX based 350, 396 cid engines and LS7 427. I think you can pick one or all engines, serial numbered to your car.

What's the factory warranty on those?   100 runs?  or 25 miles?  whichever comes first?  :)
