1969 Camaro SS396 - Trim Tag Date vs. VIN Production Date
« on: February 13, 2015, 06:17:09 PM »
Good afternoon -

I am looking at purchasing a 1969 Camaro SS396.

The trim tag indicates first week of December production (12A - photo attached).

The VIN number indicates that the car was assembled on or about November 28 - definitely last week of November. (VIN - 124379N5499XX)

Does this confirm that the trim tag is not for this car?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank you!

IMO, that does not mean it's *wrong*.   The trim tag 'week of production' is an estimate, but other factors can come into play which affect the exact production date.

12A with X codes...

Repop tag.

But one of the experts can chime in and verify.  I am certainly not one of them.

1969 Cowl Tag - X Codes
The Xnn codes were a mid-1969 model addition to the Fisher Body cowl tags of Norwood-built Camaros, starting with the 12B (second week of December) build week. (CRG has found 12B cars both with and without these codes. Our data for all cars in prior weeks is absent this code, and our data for all cars in weeks following contain this code.) These codes were an aid for Fisher body assembly workers to identify body trim and paint changes required for different Camaro models. The codes are divided into two groups: those with the Z21 style trim option and those without the Z21 style trim option.

From OP, "Any advice would be greatly appreciated - thank you!"
How fast can you run? 'Cause I'd get far, far away from that.

Thank you all for such quick responses - great new intel for me on the 12B start of the X codes!

FYI - The guy selling this car bought it at Barrett Jackson LV in 2011. I don't think he knows the issue with the trim tag & VIN. He paid +/- USD$74k & is asking CDN$80k.

Based on the replies above - I won't be purchasing the car - thanks again!

Smart move. I'm late in ressponding due to being out of town all week this and last, but my 12A L78 is 3800 cars past this one with no X code.

Wish it did - it's in the missing paperwork gap for the build date and dealer. No real way to tell if it's an X66 or X22, either.

Regards,
Steve
