Pitting in steel wheels
« on: February 12, 2015, 02:00:52 PM »
I have some original steel wheels that have some pitting in the bead sealing area and would like to save the wheels. Anyone have any recommendation for repairing them?

Saw the previous post on restoring wheels and was going to do the same thing to mine for the face of the rim for cosmetics. I am more interested in the bead area if filler would work well there and be able to seal the tire once it is mounted. In the article in musclecar review did they address repairing this area? Thanks for any input.

Thanks for the input guys. Gonna try the JB Weld Steel Stick. Read up on this stuff and it sounds like it is exactly what I need. Thanks again. ;D

Stick may work, I have used both, paste and stick. I would recommend the two tube paste form as it is more liquid and flows easier, not globbing up. You have to knead the stick pretty much and it still stays fairly solid and may crumble or not go into pitted areas as well as the paste IMO. You need to grind or sand and make a clean surface to be effective, I am sure you read. The tube form will flow and with luck, may not need to be even sanded down once cured. I used to think this stuff was a bunch of hocus pocus, like so many products, but became a believer when I repaired a Model A block that had a cracked water jacket! I even filled the pits in a master cyl. on my farm's fork lift (for safety, would not recommend this on anything that moved faster though), but it did stop leaking. I repaired my cracked C-pap too.

Thanks again for the input. Gonna try the stick and tube to see which works better tomorrow. I've blasted the wheels so I am starting with some clean metal and hopefully they'll turnout ok.
