Hello,
My name is M. Scott Morris and I have a 1968 Camaro that I purchased a few years ago as a project.
I was recently doing a VIN search on Google and saw your post regarding a Z28 302 engine block. My Camaro has that VIN code and is missing the original engine. I was under the impression my car was a SS not a Z28 although as you know authenticating that without the original engine block is virtually impossible. The car does have a Muncie and 12 bolt rear and has the proper hole in the firewall for the Muncie speedometer cable. I will send you a picture of the cowl tag and vin # for you to check out. I know this is an old post but I found it interesting to possibly find out if that’s the original engine for my car.. Feel free to contact me if you want or need any additional information.

Best Regards. Scott

I would hope hidden vins were checked due to the replacement dash top.

Jon has been great, he has been helping a lot trying to find the engine so we can confirm if the car is an SS or Z28. I have some of the previous owners information from DMV but have no luck getting ahold of anyone on my list.

Doesn’t seem like it was a Z28. An M20 and 3.31 axle point toward an SS350. Unless it was special ordered.

Yes, most likely a SS 350 and that’s ok with me but a slight possibility it was a Z28 that was special ordered. I will keep trying to get in contact with previous owners to find out. It does make for an interesting story though. Thank You for all the help.

Looks like a M20 and 3.31 gears may be a good combo for a Z28. If someone wanted a more friendly street combo It may have been worth ordering that way.

For road racing, the 3.31 and M20 combination does make some sense. So if someone knew what they wanted, it could have been ordered that way. But most received the 3.73 or 4.10 axles.

I run an M21 behind a 500+ hp big block with a 3.31 rear end. It’s not a rocket off the line, so you have to baby it a little at take off. Once you get rolling, no problem - the torque takes over. Someday I may swap in an M20.
