Also.. I am almost certain myself that it is a mask line. I don't think that the tag has ever been off.

When you have a chance, could you check and confirm the carb date code? The bottom half of the stamp is very faint but to me looks like 8B1. Chances are that I'm misreading it, that would not fit with an 08D (of 69) build if it's original to the car.

Hi.. I think you are correct. It looks to me like the stamping is either 831 or 8B1 and after doing a little research I see that this date would not be original to my car. The man I bought the car from said it was original. I have known him for a very long time and I don't think he tried to mislead me, I just think he didn't understand the date code. He probably saw the rest of the numbers and figured it was original. I was hoping it was as well but that's why I posted pics. I am looking for you guys to educate me. At least I am fortunate enough that it does appear to be an original Z28 carb.

Correct assembly line carbs were dated as yr-month-week (3 digits).  Service replacements were 4 digits after 1973 I believe.  1-0 represented the months Jan-Oct and the letters A and B were used for Nov and Dec..  So if yours is a B (Dec) then yes it's the wrong dated carb.  You'll just need to look at it close as it appears somewhat scuffed towards the bottom half.  Also 9's can almost look like an 8 (1st digit).  It could be a 981 thus falling in line with the 08D build on the cowl tag.  ???

Not a great pic, but pad looks good.
Tag looks good, but also looks like it was off the car at one time.
Too bad they didn't fix the hole next to the tag. A lot harder to fix now...
Replating the booster and m/c cover would make a big appearance difference, IMO.

Yes.. I agree.. Replating those items would make a big difference. I also wish the hole next to the tag would have been fixed. The 2nd owner that I spoke with is the one that had the car painted in the mid to late 90's and I guess they just didn't pay quite as much attention to detail as they should have back then. The paint and body on the car is quite remarkable though and it retains all of its original body panels. I am not sure if the tag was ever removed from the car. I will contact the 2nd owner to ask him to see if he remembers. He bought it in 1984.

re the 'hole'..   measure the diameter, and go to Lowes or another similar store and buy a black plastic pop in plug and it will make that hole 'not as obvious' until you get opportunity to weld it up... :)

Great minds think alike Gary. I buy those pop in plugs for a lot of my cars to fill in stock holes that I don't want to weld up, in case I want to use them later.

The pop in plugs are a good interim solution if you aren't ready to tear the car down, weld up the holes, and repaint....

Very happy. I had the motor pulled out of the Z28 because I am going to have a friend of mine freshen up the motor and detail it a bit. I was able to find the partial vin by the oil filter. Now I know the car has its original motor and trans. I just have to find the rear numbers.

Fixing that hole is not a big deal, no need to tear the entire firewall apart to do so. Might as well do it when you redo the booster and MC. Line around tag is obviously a mis-tape. Best to overtape and cut tight with an X-acto. I like the 'Cuda more.

Since the motor is out can you get a more direct and clear pic of your stamp on the pad and of the VIN stamp near the filter ?  My partial VIN stamp (like many) was hard to read, in fact I didn't even think I had one due to being covered with paint.  I used a brass wire brush and paint thinner and whala !

Hi.. Yes.. I will try to get a pic. I was the same way. At first I was getting disappointed because I didn't see the number and then after scuffing it with a wire brush and applying a little paint thinner it started to appear. I was sure happy to find it!!

I agree with Kurt you may want to replate your m/c and booster while the engine is out of the car. Looks like someone took the black paint off of your fan blades. If so you can use Krylon 1613 to refinish the blades. If you want you can have a really good time putting the last original detail touches on your car. You have a great place to start. Very nice car and an original drive train is great. Most important is to have fun and drive it.
