When I bought and parted out Camaro's in the 80's to help fund raising my children, I came across a few with trailer hitches.
And when I bought my 67 hardtop from the original owner in California, it still had a trailer hitch on it. They all had the same style of mounting whereby it had two thick bars extend under the gas tank and bolted to the trunk floor and also the bottom of the rear valance and made me wonder if at that time if it was a dealer item, but I doubt it.

Yup, if you look in Jerry MacNeish's '69 Z/28 Fact Book, you'll see a photo of him towing his SS396 Chevelle to the drag strip with his '69 Z/28!  :)

Similar to what Mike described but this one bolts to the bumper and only has a single bar to goes under the tank to the trunk floor.  Still have the hitch stowed away in the garage along with the car..   ;D

The original owner of my car also had a 1970 Z28 that he used to flat tow the 69 to the track with. Car still has the home-made tow tabs on it. Probably far more common than we realise now, but would have loved to see a photo of that.......

I made an error when I stated attached to the lower valence. It is actually as Darrell's picture shows being attached to the bumper at the rear. The remainder of my description remains the same though.
So much for my memory!

those dealer installed trailer hitches that attached to the bumper, were only rated for 1000 lb trailers weight, 100 lb tonque weight.
