Correct Carb Part #

[Mark's 68 L78 RS SS]

Hello:

I want to get back to the correct Holley 780 on my 68 L78. Just a check on the correct part number. Is it 4053 DZ? I know (unless I get really lucky)  I won't be able to have the correct date code but would like to at least get the correct part number.

The 68 L78 carb is a Holley list number 4053 and the Chevrolet P/N is 3923289 DZ. They come up on ebay all the time so you should be able to find one with a date code you need. Just do a search...

This carb is also being reproduced, so if you don't care about a correct date code, you can go that route.

I will check Ebay although I am a little concerned about getting someone else's problem, I would prefer to have a correct date code.  I see in the Year One book they will recondition/replate carbs to bring back to original but it is a little costly.  I guess I can always sell my carb to help, offset the cost.  I will have to double check the numbers on it.

There are several guys out there that can restore your carb for you. I'm not sure what goes into the Year One process, but you might want to check out ERIC JACKSON'S WEB SITE. He's one of the best and his pricing is very competitive.

Jerry MacNeish is also a Holley restoration specialist - here's the 4053-DZ he did for me, and he gets a lot of business from the Corvette restoration community as well.

Wow!  That looks awesome.  Thanks for the reference.  This will make a nice winter project.  Find a proper date coded Holley, send it out for restoration and then install for spring.     Can I ask what is the guideline on the carb date code vs. engine build date and car build date?

The carb should be dated back from the car's final assembly date, not the engine assembly date (they were installed at the car assembly plant, not at the engine plant); 2-8 weeks is "typical", although NCRS allows up to six months in Corvette judging.
