What's the correct Alternator bracket for a 69 Z/28
« on: August 22, 2014, 01:05:31 AM »
Hello all,
Thought I try here for an answer to what are the correct Alternator brackets for a 69 Z/28 with the original alternator.  I was given some parts for a 69 Z that I have and I happen to get 2 different front lower Alternator brackets.   They have different bents in them at different locations.  Ones got to be the correct one.  What would the other be for and why.  I have the factory #837 Alternator as well.  Are the brackets different because the alternators are different from one another.. an #837 from a regular Alt ?

Thanks for any help.

I am certainly not positive about this, but since automatic cars did not require SMOG, and straight shifts did, the different brackets might have been to compensate for the thickness of the smog bracket, that I believe used the same fastener (if present)??   Is this why some cars have to have a 'spacer washer' depending on their configuration??

Hmmm.. good question also.  I was wondering about that spacer also. I have the smog brackets and pump but no spacer.  If I don't find an answer I'll be keeping both brackets and see which one plays out and fits the set up correctly once assembled.

Thanks Len,  No rush.  You still running the smog.  Inn wondering if it has anything to do with the smog which I'll be using.

I dont know which is correct but from what I know there is a weird bushing that goes through the bracket for the air pump-so the pulley lines up- maybe one is stamped different and doesent use the bushing? I also would like to see pics of correct one

Hmm doesn't the Z28 smog pump have a spacer under the pulley also for alignment?
Never have seen pics of an original set-up showing correct parts for alignment.
Anyone have pics and dimension for pulley spacer as well?

Nope, 1969 Z28 does not use a spacer, 458 pulley goes rite against the white plastic fan hub. The Upper bracket is Correct, the lower bracket is for 74 up. My car has original smog, I will post a picture tomorrow

You just beat me to the punch on the pulley spacer rszmjt ...lol.  Yes the top bracket in my first pic is the correct one.  Len (6667ss138) had pointed out to me about a spacer that's pressed into his bracket in the most central hole of his bracket (which mine is missing).  Is that for the smog pump attachment ?

Thanks

Can you (or someone) with an car with smog, that's been there since the factory, take a photograph of the bracket and spacer? and the assembly as on the engine for those of us attempting to add smog back to our engines...  Thanks..

x2 with you Gary,   Since mine is all disassembled I'd like to see these brackets fixed to one another also.  I'm also guessing that I'll need to find a bracket with that bushing already pressed in because I'm missing my bushing  :(   I know the bushing has a relief cut but finding the correct diameters (inside/outside) might be tough I'd think.

There is a split spacer on AMK that states that it fits 69-73 GM Smog Pumps.  There is no GM part number associated with it but the specs are.....

.39 ID x .51 Length x .49 OD

Might find someone that has an original and get them to check to see if theirs matches the specs on this one.

Seems to me the bushing might have a flared type end that rests against the smog pump, and it is seamed. I never had a chance to take a picture today, car is up on a storage hoist.  I will tomorrow and post a picture.
