69 z/28 JL8 Camaro?
« on: May 18, 2014, 11:53:01 PM »
Hi new to this forum Iam restoring what I believe to be an original 69 z/28 JL8 Camaro does anyone know if there is a list of the known  original JL8 cars?  when I got this car it had never been apart(pretty rusty) but it was all there with original (born with drive train ie engine trans and rear end . the car  had three owners before me the guy I bought it from had the car 28 years and never touched it just collected parts.  he gave me the guys name he bought it from when  I contacted him  he was surprised to here I had his z, he said he bought it from the original owner when it was a year and a half old (never got any paper work ) he drove it till it got pretty used up and then parked it till he sold it to the guy that I bought it from. he paid 1700.00 dollars for it. (wow). he gave me the original owners name but I have yet to find him. the car was built the first week of may 1969.  I  looked thru the orphan vins but nothing. just wondering if I should contact Wayne Quinn for some help .

No one has a VIN listing of factory JL-8 cars. Since conversion parts were sold by Chevrolet for years it isn't all that difficult to build one and several have been done. So you really need paperwork to claim originality.

Wayne doesn't seem too involved these days but you should get a copy of his book Camaro Untold Secrets. It's the best source for detailed engineering info on all the racing equipment Chevy developed for the cars. Another JL8 wizard was Larry Hooten out of Louisiana. Haven't spoken with him in years, don't know if he is still involved.

I briefly had a JL8 Z/28 in the '70s. It was Hugger Orange, Orange Houndstooth. Sold new out of Dale Chev here in WI. No idea what happened to it. Dale also had a Daytona Yellow Yellow Houndstooth Z/28-RS that a bud owned.
Learning more and more about less and less...

Welcome mr. Chevy. I don't believe there is any kind of list for the JL-8 cars. There were only 200 or so made. Paperwork would be important. I would get notarized letters from the two owners that you have contacted stating that the car had 4 wheel discs when they owned it. Also search for the original owner and order the shipping documents to find the original dealership. They may still be around, or a salesman may remember the car. On a side note, my 69 z-28 is also an 05A car. My vin is 9N639XXX. Is your engine casting an 010 block or a 618 block. A couple of us 05A guys are putting together casting numbers and date codes from various components I.e. Head casting dates, YHwheel dates, block casting date and casting number. If you could supply some of these numbers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Getting the stamps and dates off the components could also disprove (or lend credence to) the belief that the JL8 is factory original to the car...

thx guys for the quick replies , my partial vin is 643xxx 05a my car is close to being done, this year for sure .! any 05a guys want to get in touch with me, email me at basscord40@verizon.net ill share any casting nos.  I can.  just a note when I contacted the second owner he was little apprehensive  on talking to me but when I told him I found his little metal hid a key box under the front fender with an original extra ignition    and trunk key he was convinced I was for real. I never said anything about 4 wheel disc brakes just asked him what he remembered about the car he said it was wicked fast and  then he said I had nothing but trouble with those damn 4 wheel disc brakes ! he is going  sign a notarized letter to verify that. hope to here from you 05a guys thanks john

Weren't the service 4 wheel disc housings different from production? Seems to me that I read that the housing tubes were not the same.

Yes, they were/are different in several respects.   SD units used larger diameter axle shafts, larger dia axle bearings *(same size as the FS Chevy), had more plates and heavier springs in the posi unit, and several more differences.

The database has a number of JL8's in it. Right about 25%.

I know of 2 other 9N643xxx JL8's.

What color is your car?

I assume out of the 200 they produced Kurt knows the vins of 25% or about fifty cars.
