Rumors continue to swirl throughout the community about the future of Don Steves Chevrolet. The Journal interviewed Linda Steves, who along with her husband Tom is doing everything she can to maintain the dealership as a new car dealer. She made the following statement, “We’re selling cars. We still have customers for them. We are a Chevy franchise until October 1, 2010. A lot can happen between now and October 2010. Don Steves will be here past that.”
General Motors is going through a huge transition. The Steves made an appeal of the decision to end their dealership which they received 10 days after the first round of closure letters arrived at dealerships. The corporation, which is currently in bankruptcy, seems to believe only those dealerships located close to a freeway should be left open, ignoring the fact that Don Steves has always ranked in the top five dealerships in its zone which includes L.A. and Orange County.
Steves pointed out the closing of the dealership affects not only La Habra’s revenues but also Whittier’s. Sales tax receipts are credited to the city in which the owner resides. Whittier residents have constituted 60% of the dealership’s new car sales.
As things stand now the dealership will remain an official Chevy dealership until October 2010 able to purchase and sell new Chevys, like the latest Camaro sold last week.
The dealership will continue its General Motors service department, do warranty work and service all GM brands.
The Steves have appealed the closure decision and enlisted the help of Congressional representatives, industry friends, and anyone else they think will help. “We are here to stay,” Linda concluded.
