1970 Camaro Z28 national press showing car information
« on: April 22, 2014, 04:34:51 AM »
I have come across a 70 Z that has a national press showing notification on the bottom of the build sheet. What is the significance of this and is there any additional information available on this topic? Thanks.

Sounds like the car was built to be part of the press showing.

Hi John

I have never heard of that before. Is there any more info on it available and is it mean anything in terms of the car?

Chevrolet had MANY pre-introductory showings/test drives for writers every year. When the event was over, the cars generally went back to the Zones until they accumulated 3,000 miles, and then were wholesaled to dealers or sold to employees. The Zone offices were revolving doors for company-owned cars.

I assume you are referring to the 1970 RS / Z28 on eBay right now (see link below). According to GM Archives (and I confirmed this myself with one of their curators) there were only six Z28's assigned to be part of a "National Press Showing", which took place in Van Nuys, CA (right outside the Assembly Plant's "New Car Prep Lot") in early February. The car being offered for sale was #3 of the six cars and the only one finished in "Citrus Green Poly". It was fitted with a manufacturer plate "34F 015".

I take it that the current owner used these two details listed in GM's documentation to locate the photos of the car in various period publications including the cover of the May 1970 issue of Motorcade magazine. It must have been a thrill to find that not only was your car used as a GM Press Vehicle but actually made it on the cover of a magazine.

As an aside, I also noticed that the car appeared on the cover of my reprint Wiring Diagram from Classic Industries.

Cool piece of history, but I wonder why it was painted the wrong color? Figure another 10k to strip it and paint it correctly.

I assume the owner liked the "Forrest Green Poly" better. I can't blame him. The "Citrus" color does scream Ford Pinto.

That would be a nice looking Pinto. Citrus Green isn't for everyone, but I like it a lot.

There are at least two other questionable spellings.

Considering his questionable business practices the seller, ebay user 10chevy aka Superspyder(here) aka Avanti(Nastyz28), I wouldnt trust anything about that car.  I posted pics of all the rust issues on the car and SuperSpyder, avanti, 10chevy did some pretty shady things. Lots of other issues with the car as well. Read this thread http://www.nastyz28.com/forum/showthread.php?t=278311

Yeah, I FUD a check of other build sheets and noticed the misspellings too. That would have been a pretty sloppy mistake if it were a forgery.

This is directed at our two new members who have only posted in this thread (though it's true in general).
To be clear, I have no tolerance for dragging a conflict from other forums to the CRG forum, esp a non-1st gen topic.
I will just delete the thead and ban people.  :)
