S = St. Louis, MO assembly plant
015958 = serial number sequence

You can't decode the exact model full-size Chevy (Bel Air, Biscayne, Caprice, Impala, etc.) with the partial VIN.  You would need the full VIN to do that.

St. Louis was a "complex", and was the largest assembly plant in North America in the 60's; it had a 4-story main plant with a 65-per-hour passenger car line that built Impala and Caprice, and a 35-per-hour Truck line that built everything from pickups to school bus chassis, and all of the forward-control Corvair-based trucks (Corvan, Greenbrier, Rampside, etc.) were built on the 4th Floor. The Corvette plant was a separate small building on the rear corner of the property, behind the powerhouse and coal pile. I spent 8 months at Corvette in '67-'68 and 4 months in the Passenger line in '68-'69.

1969 Corvettes were built at St Louis, but their VINs are in the range of:  700001 to 738762.  The VIN sequence of the transmission under discussion was obviously NOT from a Corvette (even though it went into a St Louis assembled '69 vehicle), so it had to be from a different model assembled in St Louis.   We're lucky to have access to the knowledges of people like JohnZ (who worked there and knows what they assembled in addition to Corvettes) and to 1968RSZ28 (who recognized the particular VIN sequence as being from a full size passenger).   Incidentally, I'd suspect that a 4-speed-Muncie-equipped full size in '69 would be a rare vehicle, as the numbers of 4-sp manual equipped Impalas were going down significantly each year after 1964....

Didn't have a clue, other than the Corvette part. I guess it must be that the Corvettes get most of the attention, it never occurred to me that other car were being built in St Louis as well.

As far as Muncie 4 speeds in Impalas, I bought one early in the 70's from a guy and it came out of an Impala with a 396, as I recall. It was either a 66 or 67 model.
