To some degree - yes.  A large part of that  increase was a direct result of federal gov't. mandated emission and safety standards.

As far as I'm concerned, GM should have went out. If my business goes bankrupt, who bails me out? Nobody. Oh, that's right, I'm not one of the "special" people who get bailed out by the taxpayer. (nor do I wish or expect to be) Politicians didn't ante up the bail out funds. They took funds from me, and millions of other tax payers.

You might also note (besides inflation) that the $4000 Z/28 was an ordinary production car, where the new Z/28 is an all-out race car for the track that includes and meets 40 years of safety and emissions regulations. Apples and oranges.

Agree it is more track oriented, and has come a long way but $75K come on now. I would be surprised if it costs GM 40K more than the SS or 20K more than a ZL-1. I get that there has been upgrades to the motor and suspension, (wouldn't it be cheaper with no AC, thinner rear glass, and smaller wheels?     ) Still seems like a heavy handed upgrade in the price to me.

It might be, like the pharmaceutical industry and its high prices, that one is paying for the R&D of a track proven car.

If your business goes "bankrupt"  you are being "bailed out" depending on how you file you will only be responsible for a portion or none of your incurred debt and in some cases can continue to operate your business. Who pays for that? other consumers, business owners and tax payers. Unfortunately some people both conservative and liberal use this as a business model. Bail outs for big businesses are a touchy subject a lot of jobs and effects on the economy at stake, although I don't think that the "top dogs" running these failed businesses should come out of it virtually unscathed.
Did I mention that i am a fan of the "flat hood" 69 Z/28's?

It was for the pensions GM had more people collecting pensions and health care than any other American company the government would of paid more money if they did not bail out! Nobody remembers when ford was on the verge of going bankrupted years ago GM bought there office buildings  that are GM head quarters today! I am not for bailouts however, GM had to many retiree's in my opinion! And no I never worked for GM!

Is a pretty cool car--where have they been all these years ? Would look real good with an " aerodynamic, fresh air  via cowl inducted" hood however !---hugger orange!  Great platform, ouch says the survivor guys
