1967 Camaro Quadrajet 7037202 (AIR System)
« on: January 20, 2014, 10:33:29 PM »
Hello everyone- I was wondering if I could get some help from the group. I have been looking for the correct quadrajet for my 1967 Camaro.  I recently purchased two 7037202 carbs.  The second one was purchased because the baseplate on the first one was questionable.  My question is what is the correct linkage for the secondaries.  As you can see in the photos, the two carbs have two different types.  Does anyone know their qudrajets pretty well or has photos of an un-molested 7037202.

Thank you,

Jerry

For a non-smog car-yes. Smog (AIR) will have a 703xxxx.

Can you post a picture of the right side (pass) and top of both carbs?
There were 2 ways to lock the secondary. One was using a tab located on the right side throttle plate and when cold it would prevent the secondary valve from opening because it would be locked by a cam. As the engine warmed, the fast idle cam would rotate and eventually allow the secondary lock cam to drop back and allow the tab to rotate with the secondary shaft. That type usually used the spring type of secondary coupling seen on the left side of the throttle plate.
The other type used a cam that swung out to mechanically lock the top secondary butterfly valve when cold and that was mounted next to the choke valve mechanics. As the engine warmed, the cam would move to allow the secondary butterfly valves to open. That type usually used the direct coupling (no spring) to the secondary throttle valve.
Either configuratoin would allow the throttle mechanics to move fully even though the secondary was locked during cold engine temps.

Here you go.  The first is a picture of the other side of the first carb and the second is of the latter.  Also, another question- are they both missing the vacuum tube that is affixed directly underneath the canceling cam (small hole) or did some come without a tube (similar to 7027202).  Thank you

That is interesting because the base plates are correct for each carb. What are the dates on those two carbs? It should be a letter and number combination stamped in the metal tag (example: B7).
As for the vacuum line, if the hole has a plug in it then it was not used  likely, otherwise the tube fell out.
Being it's an AIR carb, I believe there should be a vacuum line there that ran to the fuel mixture control valve / diverter valve.
I know that line is on my 67 LOS BB.
Here is some additional info: http://www.camaros.org/emissions.shtml#valves

Thanks. The carbs were built a month apart.  The first one is L66 (Nov 66) and the second is M66 (Dec.66)

Thanks,

Jerry

Is the carb dated Dec 66 the one with the spring on the throttle plate by chance?
What is of interest is that I have seen both types but never compared them to the months they were made until now.
Maybe this thread stumbled onto answering why there was a differences and period of change?
I suspect that (with a cold engine) the spring design was more of a positive method of controlling the secondary circuit. By that I mean keeping the throttle plate shut, there is less chance of gas flowing past the secondary needles, even when they are seated, due to hydrostatic pressure differences between the secondary nozzle tip, that would otherwise be exposed to vacuum if the throttle plates opened, and the fuel bowl as would be with the other design type of keeping the secondary butterfly valve shut (non-spring version). Just my guess.
I would use the carb closes to the date your car was made based on the trim tag date stamped.
I looked at both my mid-year L35's (4B w/AIR & 5B non-AIR)  and they both use the spring type of secondary throttle plate.
What month was your car made?

Thanks for the reply. The Dec 66 one is tue one with the spring on the throttle plate. The one with the smaller spring ( hidden behind the bracket) is the Nov 66. My car was built the fourth week of Jan. 01D. A lot of the parts on my engine, dist etc are december parts.

Glad I posted the thread.
