1969 Under hood weather stripping and decals
« on: September 15, 2006, 07:02:58 PM »
I have a 69 327/210 hp.  There is weather stripping under the hood in front of the radiator as well as around the windshield cowling.  Was this standard or did someone decide to get fancy?  I am the fourth owner.  Spring loaded "t clips"  for lack of the correct name hold the weather strip in place.  Replace the weather strip or remove and live with the holes is the question?

2nd question...is there a source that gives accurate info on under the hood decals and placements for the non-Z28 & SS models?

thanks,  Greg

Greg,

Does your car have factory A/C? If so, then yes, you should have a strip of weatherstripping on the top of the Radiator Support. (All cars recieved weatherstripping on the Cowl.)

2. No one source that I know of. The A.I.M. is pretty good, but even it doesn't show all the decals. Which ones are you having trouble with?

Greg, dunno about '69s, but my '68 Assembly Manual shows decal placements such as emissions specs underhood, as well as others. For a few bucks it's well worth the read. It has RPO codes and related extra part information (such as your a/c seal on the radiator) and will show you virtually every part, give part #s, torque specs and other information on your car. Rick's, Year One, all the repro guys have them. A Fisher Body manual will tell you about most trim, window and interior questions. Great way to spend a few rainy afternoons. My 2 cents and good luck!

Ed,
Yes it does have factory air.  Thanks for that info and quick reply.    Looks like I am out to buy the assembly manual and Fischer Body manual.  As far as the declas go, I just want to add the proper ones under the hood.  The emissions decal on the air cleaner cowl, if it is supposed to have one, the Harrison evaporator box decal, and fan shroud caution decal.  Others in question that are not under the hood are the tire pressure decal inside the driver's door, "astro ventilation decal"  and others.  I will start with the manuals referenced in the replies.

Again, thanks much...

Greg

and fan shroud caution decal.

There was never a fan shroud "caution" sticker - that's a Ford part that many of the vendors still think goes on Camaros, made "famous" by all the "restored" cars on eBay that have them. :(

Thanks all for the good info...this is the best Camaro group forum out there.  The fan shroud sticker comes off tonight.

Hey John--the off-brand Ford guys needed that sticker because if they'd buy a Ford they're too dumb to know a fan on a running engine will cut your fingers off! Long live the General!

This is a new one for me. There is a weather strip on top of the radiator support? I do not recal seeing that before.

Gary, the a/c cars had the strip to divert more air at speed through the condenser as I understand it. Greg...I can tell you that on '68s the tire pressure "decal" was on the inside of the glovebox door, and the the Astro Ventilation "decals" were on the door windows at the "V" where the window met the windshield post in the front. On an interesting sidenote, the "Positraction" decals in the trunk weren't decals at all, as the repro guys sell them; They were plain pieces of printed paper glued on with adhesive squirted from a glue gun. Hope this helps.

Gary,

Yes, there were actually a couple of engine compartment "Seals" that were included with the A/C option. Here's a picture of the Radiator Support Seal, but there were others as well, all listed under Group 1.270 in the P&A. I don't think these are being repopped, so unless the original is still in good shape, most people just rip it off!

If it is not being repopped take a piece of the old one and compare it to the cowl to hood seal (on the top of the wiper cowl) on a late 68- 72 A body or B body GM car... it looks very close to them. If they are not close post a photo of the cross section... I have some other ideas on close matches.

The weather stripping in the photo above is identical to the one on my 69.  It is also quite different from the weather stripping at the cowl to hood.  I have looked in several catalogs and since called Rick's.  That part is no longer being reproduced...I'm interested in your other ideas on close matches...

Three questions:
1. Does the P&A list other models that had this seal?  (Maybe those would turn up in the junk yard.)
2. Is there a P/N, description, and/or picture of the clips?
3. Exactly where are the holes for the clips?
