Canadian Emissions / Smog

Was wondering if any Canadian members might be able to help with a question.  Spoke to the original owner of my car and was told that it was sold from the dealer without the smog set-up. The first owner did not take the smog off the car.  Does anyone else know if Canadian dealers might have taken the smog system off cars when sold ?  thanks

I was into the Musclecar scene here in Kingston, Ontario back in the late 60's and early 70's.  The two I bought new, 69 RS/SS L48 Auto and 70 Chevelle SS L34 Auto, obviously did not come with smog.  However, I knew guys that did order or buy 1969 cars with smog setups (Z/28's and L78 Chevelles) and they had the smog setups.  I also know our local Chevy dealer did numerous requests from purchasers to remove the setups upon delivery.

I am not aware of this dealer, or any other dealers, removing them on their own before a sale.  Obviously it could have happened outside my knowledge area.

I would suspect  that the exhaust manifolds were installed much later; perhaps after having had the originals discarded for headers earlier?   Or were big block cars with automatics delivered wtih plugged exhaust manifolds?

From the EMISSION SYSTEMS report:

In 1967 (as in 1966), emissions equipment was required only on cars sold in California. The California cars were fitted with an AIR system (Regular Production Option (RPO) K19), and the PCV system (RPO K24). All engines equipped with K19 had unique engine codes due to the required holes in the exhaust manifold(s). Also, the L26 (230 ci L6) engines with K19 used a different distributor and the L30 (327 / 275hp) engines with K19 had a different initial timing. Note that smog equipment was not required on cars built in California but intended for sale in other states.

In 1968, vehicles exported to Canada and other countries did not require the AIR system. RPO KD1 was used to delete the system (if it would have been so equipped otherwise) and 1/4"-18 NPSF straight pipe thread plugs were installed in the manifolds. It is unknown if a credit was issued on the Canadian window stickers for this delete. The Controlled Combustion System was still installed on the exported L6 automatic and small block automatic cars.

In 1969, Canadian cars used the same emission controls as U.S. cars.

It is a 1969. Car would have been imported into Canada ( Ontario ) with the smog. The original owner bought the car and the smog had already been removed.  Holes in the exhaust manifolds were plugged.  The original owner did not take the smog off the car. That is how the car was purchased. I a restoring the car now and debating about the smog system

I can't speak for Canada, but in the US it was illegal for dealers to remove smog equipment, even if asked by the purchaser.

I have 2 Canadian GM Vintage Vehicle Documents for 1968 Camaros, both 396/375HP cars and 1 has KD1 code which is smog exempt (delete) and the other does not. The cars are about 3 weeks apart. The non smog equipped car was sold new at Beny Chev Olds in Lethbridge/Alberta/Canada in March/68, the other with smog equipment was sold at Stedelbauer in Edmonton/Alberta/Canada in Feb/68. 

My own 06A RSZ28 has smog and was delivered to Beny Chev Olds in Lethbridge/Alberta/Canada,

1969 Canadian cars had smog unless the GM Documents showed KD1, which was smog delete, this might only apply to solid lifter cars. I think there was like a $17 credit if the guy ordering the car was savy enough to list RPO KD1, this was only to Canadian delivered cars not USA.

69's were shipped from the plant with smog, (if required).
Sounds like the dealer may have removed it, if the orig owners memory is correct.

I realize this is an old post, but it's a good segue for my own question regarding my Canadian sold 1968 L78 Camaro. My car is unrestored and does not have any trace of a smog system, but the GM of Canada paperwork doesn't list the smog delete option. Would this have been a mandatory deletion or would the ordering dealer have had to specifically request that option? Just looking to understand whether I should be sourcing parts to put a system together for this car.

It shouldn't have it.
I don't understand what drove the inclusion of KD1 on the Canadian paperwork some times, but not others.
