Fill & Drain Plugs 1969 Muncie M22
« on: December 17, 2013, 06:58:28 PM »
I discovered (with help from Jerry M) that the drain and fill plugs in my 3/69 build date Muncie M22 transmission were likely from either a late 1969 or post 1969 production M22. The plugs are made by Lisle and I have seen them stamped with a P, W (with underline), the Lisle script only, with the Lisle Magnetic 2 script and Lisle Magnetic 3 script.  The Lisle Magnetic 2 design is correct for my transmission build date and most early/mid 1969 and prior M22 production transmissions. The Lisle Magnetic 2 plugs also have a unique dual spade magnet design (see "bottom view" photo).

Did Jerry M say that m-22 the used a magnetic fill plug ? My original m-22 only had a magnetic plug on the drain and the fill plug was non magnetic.

Looks good Lloyd.  Those are correct per my discussion with Jerry as well.   Here's the plugs that are on my Z's original M22.   After Jerry rebuilt it, he requested follow-up pics for his files and research.   Confirmed original for the car/trans.  Built date of the car is 04B.   Note that the trans came with two magnetic plugs - both the same.

Thanks for the confirmation Hans, your Lisle plugs look identical to my replacements.

Nice work on documenting the different plugs Lloyd. I was unaware until now that the M22 had a drain plug. Great detail here, keep up the good work.

All M22's had a drain plug. The cast boss for it was on all Muncie cases, but it was only drilled/tapped for a plug on M22's and on ALL Muncies starting in 1970. Many rebuilders also added the drain plug to pre-1970 Muncies.

I have visited the Lisle Manufacturing plant that made the original plugs.  I tried to see if they could make them again with the same original lettering.  No dice.

I believe the LISLE 3 plug was in use prior to the M22 being introduced (so it is prior to 1965).

There are at least three minor variations of the LISLE MAGNETIC 2 plug.  The 1969 model year type plugs were also used in 1968 M22s in Camaros.

From what I can tell, the P and LISLE plugs are 1970 and later.  Possibly some in very late 1969 but not sure on that.  Typically used when there was both a fill and drain plug.

The W plug with underline is a fill plug, the normal plug for M20 and M21 transmissions 1969 and earlier.

Bryon, thanks for filling in some additional details on the applications.

Lloyd, I changed your quote from my earlier post because I made some edits after you made the quote.

Your second picture shows two types of the LISLE MAGNETIC 2 plug.  I will try to post a picture of the other one later.

Well I guess there are maybe four different LISLE MAGNETIC 2 plugs.  And the 3 plug is a larger diameter.

Plug with the 2 in the lower left is probably a 1965-1967 M22 plug.

Another picture showing plugs from both sides.  From left to right.
LISLE MAGNETIC 2
LISLE magnetic
P magnetic
W fill plug (note - not magnetic)
No marks magnetic - current plug that is not correct, but is functional for the task.  I have about 100 of these new.
