Also note unpainted fewer clam for heater hoses.

  That may very well be gray phosphate on that clamp.

Yes must be phosphated. Looks like a lighter shade of phosphating. But defiantly not painted, as are most that you see on restored cars.

Yea, if something can be put on one way or the other in a process there will be a population that are assembled not according to the normal process. And in assembly work wording with 10's of seconds I can imagine it happened a few times during the model year. Guess we could call it process variation.
On another note our late 70's NOS Y55 came with red ringed parts which we changed in anticipation of the finished 68Z restoration.

Its always interesting what you can note.  When Jerry posted this pic the first thing that jumped out at me was the negative battery cable location (routing).
Guess its why in some cases or many there is no ONE way correct.....

  Not meaning to change the thread, but I can't help notice your fender inner sections don't have full coverage of blue paint (I can see primer along the metal folds).
That looks pretty 'factory' to me and nice. Was it like that originally on the one you restored? Being they were sprayed by hand I can certainly understand how that final finish came about.

First I was fortunate enough to have access to the car Lloyd currently owns for about 5
I set them up on a "buck" as described by JohnZ with about a 2" gap between the panels, and let the paint fall where it did.
I am painting a 69 X66 conv for a customer now and the same will apply for it, although with silver over gray primer it is difficult to tell where the transition occurs...

Here is an early photo of a 1969 Z/28 engine compartment that appeared in Hot Rod Magazine. You can clearly see the DELCO script is painted on the battery. The "Delco Eye" filler cap should be in the second from right (passenger side) position as shown. The photo Chick posted (originally from Jerry) is from a 1968.

That snap-closed heater hose clamp was phosphated or Parkerized from the supplier.

Eddie, this is the battery you want for the production date of your car, its the only repro I'm aware of that is a side terminal design and with the appearance of a Y77, just needs painting. Batteries from this company have been poorly received by the hobby however they now have a 4 year warranty which is an improvement.  I use a top post battery I bought from them that has served me well for almost 3 years (so far).

Lloyd - yes I agree - I do have this or the R89 in the car as we speak..(.have to check)....related to the color - the repro is red - what do u think, paint it yellow?

Im still confused on the color scheme and does the letters get painted as well as the caps?

Eddie, for the 1,600 mile Z/28 the caps must be painted yellow. It's unclear if the embossed DELCO and Energizer script are also to be painted yellow as there seems to be strong evidence to support painted or unpainted. Personally for a restored car I prefer painted lettering as James did per the photos he posted on this thread. It looks sharp adds color to the engine compartment and is supportably correct.

Could also be that Delco colored the lettering for the 69 year were previous years it was left blank..??.

I agree the Yellow Script does look sharp. Key is painting is so it looks clean and crisp!

I was asked for a color match on the Yellow.
The only way I can give a color match is through using a Pantone book.

The Pantone number which I used is 3945.
**If you put the paint on thin the black of the case will cause the yellow to go to the green side.

I noticed another important detail in the factory photo of the Z28 engine in Post #10: the valve cover retainers are UNDER the spark plug wire retainers, and the latter were installed with the "hollow" side facing down.

I've heard arguments that the spark plug wire retainers should be installed with the hollow side facing up and the valve cover retainers should be on top...inside the hollow side of the plug retainers.  This factory photo shows what left the factory.  Also, the picture in the 68 AIM (I don't have the AIM with me as I write this comment) on radio ground straps looks to me like a retainer order similar to what is shown in this photo.  The ground strap goes between the valve cover and valve cover retainer, with the plug wire retainer on top (hollow side facing down).
