clips and seal for RH side inner fender brace
« on: November 27, 2013, 04:08:29 PM »
When I disassembled my front clip, I found my driver side inner fender brace still had the seals and clips installed, but on the passenger side, the seal/clips were missing (maybe from a body shop repair early in it's life?)..  Does anyone have an extra original one for the RH side?  The brace was there, but not the seal with clips.  Does anyone reproduce the seals and clips?   Per the AIM, the part numbers called out for each is for a 'brace assembly', implying that the brace with the seals/clips is a single PN, but the only repros I've found have been for the brace only..  no seals or clips.   Any information on this part is appreciated..

I have never seen a passenger side seal, like the one on the drivers side.

Gary is this the splash shield you are referring to. If so it was installed to protect the wire harness connector, left side only. George

Yes, it's the splash shield; The AIM simply refers to both sides as 'brace assembly' to include the splash shields and necessary clips.  My car did have the driver side in place, but not the splash shield on the passenger side.    When I saw the following ebay auction the other day, it made me think I was missing something, and I also bid on this auction, but did not and it was sold to someone else (This one included the braces and shields on both sides).
http://www.ebay.com/itm/290987857632?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

The AIM, and I indicated, was not very helpful, but it did reference both braces as 'assemblies' meaning more than one part each, as PN 3919135-6, Brace ASM -L. & RH.  in UPC 11-13, sheet B2, and on Sheet B1, it shows View B, and references a shield/clips on the passenger side (Seal pn 3949606, Clip pn 3921872, and several staples pn 9985029).  I do not have that passenger side seal/clips and I'd like to find one?

Gary the brace assembly may be refering a part with nuts included, like a screw assembly. On sheet B1 it is stated left side only. Part #10 supports the shield and there would have to be an oposite shaped part to be used on the right side. I think what they are selling on Ebay is the right & left braces and two left side shields. George

That auction includes two left sides seals, not a pair.  the braces are a pair, but the seals are from the same side.  It is just in the pic, one is right side up and the other is upside down, giving the appearance of a pair.

 Interesting!
When George posted the AIM page, that looked familiar to me. I checked and found the same info he posted in my '67 AIM. Here I thought this was a '69 thing. Looking at my 04B LOS survivor and 5B NOR restored, neither have it installed nor does the 04B survivor look to ever have had it. Looking closer to the AIM revision record it states those items related to the splash shield were "added" 3/30/67. That would explain it not showing up on my 04B yet and I suspect it wasn't installed on the 05B as well due to not being in the implementation start (my notes do not even mention it existed when I disassembled the car in the early 80's). I guess these started to be used end of '67 production run and forward.

I have a couple of these seals somewhere, will have to take a close look at those clips and see how hard they'd be to replicate. Funny that pretty much everything else is reproduced on these cars, the passenger side bucket seat tether strap is the only other item that springs to mind....

I have two of these setups removed from parts cars. The clip can be made rather easily. The bracket can also but would be more difficult and has stamped reinforcements. There are photos of them on this site and T.C..

Justifying part reproduction is based on demand and profit. They don't even make full quarters for LeMans/GTOs. I can understand why they won't make a splash bracket or seatback cable.

Of course, but I find it interesting that just about every single part is available as a reproduction for these cars, with the exception of a couple.

Perhaps the demand is low for such parts because 99% of people aren't even aware the car came with them and their absence is not overtly obvious?

Valid point. One would have needed to tear into these cars over the years to know about that part, and that the LH inner fender brace is made differently from the RH to accomodate that skirt bracket. The last two people for whom I did cars didn't know either, not to mention all the others.

Here's an observation - notice the AIM shows the number of staples required for the assembly (6) - I count 5 on my original Z shield (shown); I have one for the X66 SS that is missing the material, and has only one staple through the bracket. I would guess that an assembler probably shortcut it, and the seal eventually came off (leaving the bracket behind).

I sure wish my originals looked as good as George's previous example - I wouldn't mind replacing my "survivor" to make it look better than what it does -

Steve

From other points made in this post, I'm sure my 11A built car was way too early for the shield.  As to comment on the Pass. Bucket seat teather cable, I was never aware of it until I started taking the seats apart to clean and re-upholster them.  It does, however, explain the dents in my original Glove box door.  I replaced the Door with another original, completely stripped and restored.
