cowl tags

 Is there any way to get a cowl tag for one that is missing? I have a friend with a 1968 SS 350 car that is missing the cowl tag. Does anyone reproduce them or is there a market where can one be obtained from a junked car? Any help or feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

They are out there do a search on the internet. Note In some states it is illegal to replace it, even if missing or damaged.  You can get one from a junked car if you are just looking to put something on the firewall. I would disclose this to any future buyers though, because if de-coded it will make your whole car seem like a fraud.

What is basis for wanting a new tag, just to have it on the firewall?
The best case scenario is if you have an original invoice or paperwork that shows the options of the car, get a replacement tag based on that info, but still disclose to buyers that it is a replacement tag IMO

His cowl tag was missing when he bought the car and he has no documentation. He just wants a correct cowl tag, he not trying to defraud anyone. Thanks!

If he doesn't have any documentation, What information does he have that shows it was originally a SS 350 car? In other words how does he know what is correct?

There's nothing on the 1968 cowl tag that's indicates it's a SS 350. There would be too many unknowns to make a tag that would be correct...Joe

check ebay. have him put what ever he wants on the tag.... just disclose it when or if he sells it. if the car is undocumented then it really doesn't matter what tag he puts on there imo.

Better yet post a pic of the vin so we will know if has or will have a repo tag...

And actually it doesn't matter that it even HAVE a cowl tag....  it's still a car and it is what it is.   When the original items are gone, the 'originality' is gone except for what we can verify with our eyes and knowledge.   Do you worry about putting the mfg tag back in your sweat shirts when you 'tear it out' because it aggravates your neck?

Yep. That's why you don't see any fake tags on ebay for 68! The fakers can't sell them!!

Nope... Like Joe and Ed said, there's not option info on a 68 cowl tag.

68 owners have to dig deeper and try harder!

Gary, I basically agree with what you said.  Once it is gone, it is gone... So then, it is what it is....
But, no one has ever offered me $45k for my Class of 68 sweatshirt --with or without the tag.  

Hotrod, my bottom line is this: A replacement tag is not the same as a replacement fender --even with the best of intentions. And in the end, even with disclosure, it will always raise doubt....    IMO, tell him not to waste his cash or time on the cowl tag....

I wouldn't replace it, because somewhere in time, it will be represented for something it is not.  As others have said, "It is what it is" and honest car with no cowl tag.

Well said.  Because even if the first seller discloses the repop tag, what's to stop the next one from not disclosing it?

Good point. But really the car is as good as the seller sometimes. What I mean us all these cars were new once with all the docs, little by little seller by seller they changed or had the luck of not changing and passing that originality on to the next owner.
