Cowl hood and air cleaner
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:36:39 AM »
I've got an 06A x77 Z, I'm just beginning the restoration on it and I'm wondering if you could order a cowl hood with just a standard open air cleaner or was it automatic to get the entire air cleaner assembly  when ordering the hood from the factory? And if you ordered the cowl hood did you always get the 302 badging? The car came with a cowl hood w/ 302 emblem holes but no induction equipment (relay, accel lever,ect...) car was very original paint and parts wise. More info would be great.

If ZL2 was ordered it came with everything, solenoid, flapper door, bracket on the accelerator, relay on the firewall, insulation on the hood, colw induction air cleaner, etc.  If it was ordered on a Z28 it came with the 302 emblems on it, if it was ordered on any other car, it did not come with engine size, or cowl induction (that was a 70 Chevelle emblem) on it.  You could not get just the hood from the factory.

That's what I thought as well since there wasn't a separate option for the air cleaner assembly. Thanks for your input

You could check the date on the hood and see if it corresponds to the build date of your car (06A). If it is an original ZL2 hood it will have a date stamped on the drivers side corner on the side. should be a 2 digit number that indicates what week it was produced. ex : my 08C has a hood dated 26 (26th week of 1969) .
Many owners got the hood for there car after the fact through dealerships, and I would think most of the over the counter ZL2 hoods do not have a date on them in this same spot. Did you get any paperwork with your car that may show what options it came with?

I have the POP full owner history and some receipts but no build sheet or dealer invoice. I'll have to check out that date code. Hood is pretty rusty. Was left out in the elements. But i will definitely check it out. The car was pretty original but a little rough.

Well, you have the owner history, are any of those owners above ground still? (sorry original owner CRG members ;D)
If any of them are maybe you can contact them and get some more info on what they did while they had the car? They may have pictures or be able to piece together things like the hood, and give you some good info on your car.

A car built with ZL2 will have a .75" hole just above the fuse box for the wiring harness. There is another small hole for the relay on the firewall above the RH rocker cover.

Learning more and more about less and less...

The ignition coil bracket would also be at an angle that the straight non ZL2 hoods did not use.
So if someone just added the hood chances are they didn't swap the coil in anticipation of changing over the air cleaner.

Some one pulled the original ignition for an msd!! Still need to find a distributor for it. Good info though. Thanks
